I derive pleasure everyday as my territory for work has a lot of rural in it, regularly tramping up and down A and B roads at 3 figure speeds, roads are empty, cars trip computer shows AVERAGE speeds of 55-65 mph (I never reset this so this is genuine average over 1000 miles) so imagine what the top speeds are and for how long, colleagues in the south have averages in single figures, due mainly to gridlocked roads, I moan in the rush hour if speeds on the ringroad drop below 20MPH. Oh and we don't have a pollution problem either.

The West End of Glasgow is not overrated, it's a wonderful place to live, apart from all the Scotch people who seem to live here.

Why is it wonderful James, overpriced flats, little parking, full of bloody students. No thanks.

By the way, what are "Scotch people"? are you reffering to those in the whisky industry?

Fine architecture, entertainment, good pubs, restaurants, coffee houses, record/CD shops, other shops, the Botanic Gardens, museums, easy access to City Centre, easy access to Loch Lomond....All the benefits of City life, IOW. A wonderful place. Even the schools are good.

OK, so parking is a problem, and property prices are high-ish, but that's what happens in desirable places to live. And you get to ogle lots of fit young girls. You should see Byres' Rd on a sunny weekend.

Swindon - annual charge is £12, up to three cars per house in our area and maximum of two in the centre. £150 is a piss take. Why should the council make a profit from a residents parking scheme. The cost per permit should be directly linked to the cost to administer and maintain the scheme - end of story.

If Swindon can administer for £12 then why not Glasgow? It should not be priced according to how affluent an area is percieved to be by some council chump.

Let them make revenue on the tickets issued to folks who park without a permit.

As far as I understand things isnt this the thing that singly annoys the Scots more than anything else? James - at times your subtlety belies you.

greg he knew that, I'm sure it was deliberate, saying that last time I spoke to you James I noticed you were picking up a little of the wonderful scots accent :D

    Things Scots find annoying

    English (well the media anyway)

Loch pronounced Lock, that would be like pronouncing Bach as Back

    Scotch, that is a drink

Drunken agressive Glaswegian stereotypes in dramas like casualty

And badly done scotts accents in american films, sounds more like Irish to me, closest I've heard is MIke Myers and Robin Williams and even there not that close.

    :D

James sell up the west end apartment and move to area just beside your work, you'd get a nice big detatched, you could walk to work, have a dedicated listening room and no neighbours to worry about volume, granted the talent isn't as good as student land, but you can allways visit.

The Scotch are a people who like dressing up in ladies' clothes, tossing their caber, and generally grumbling about their historical misfortunes. The architects of the Highland clearances, and all the rest of it, are now all long gone.

    I'm Anglo-Irish, so I don't look 'Scottish', because I'm not.

When are (some of) you guys going to get over the Auld English chippiness?

If I understand things correctly if you have Irish heritage but a Scottish name then your ancestors are likely to be Scottish - let's not forget the English policy of importing Scots into the North of Ireland to form an occupying colony of Protestants.

However, going back further the "Scots" were a Gaelic-speaking people of Northern Ireland who colonised Argyll and Bute in the fifth century.

In truth the entire British Isles is populated by a Heinz 57 breed of one blend or another.

...and imagine what happens to your body when you have a head-on at triple figure speeds, or stack it on black ice, or what have you? Those kinds of speeds are irresponsible on rural and A and B roads. Sorry.

As for the Scots - it's like the blacks. Latent resentment for stuff that shouldn't have happened but did, way back when. Time to move on and give it a rest if you ask me. ...and no, you can't come back at me on that one - I'm not British either - I'm Cornish :)

Dom been doing it for years, but not in a rekless way, only do it when conditions allow, whole road can be seen, keeping eye out for farm gates etc and don't tend to do it when black ice conditions or torrential rain, what you have to remember is that during the day a lot of these roads are practically empty, besides you only touch 3 figure speeds occasionally, then most likely have to brake for a corner or peotential hazard, I also am reasonable adept at controlling a sliding car, through years of practice, and have avoided potential accidents through good car control, what annoys me most is being chastised by those driving at 35mph on a rural road, because you had the audacity to overtake them, (even when staying within 60mph limit)then when hitting a 30mph speed limit only to see the same people who you have passed catch up with you as they increase their speed to 45mph in a built up area, so who is more irresponsible

This is where you are wrong, I have no problems with English people, other than kidology, but a lot of my compatriates do, they reason is not, as has wrongly been suggested, got anything to do with the "Highland Clearances" and all to do with the London centred "National" media, who assume that anyone north of the watford gap don't count, It happens less now, but an example, on BBC(thats BRITISH broadcasting corporation)olympic coverage when Alan wells one a race or medal he was praised for winning a medal for Britain, but when Daly, or Seb or Steve one an olympic medal it was a medal for England, it's these jingoistic practices bandied about by the media that give the English a bad name up here, I have a lot of English colleagues and I know that ordinary English folk don't behave this way, but a lot of my country men don't have contact with English other than Politics or televison.

I also have to say though Dom that your comment about the "Blacks" was a bit strong, and in poor taste, and bordering on raceism :(

I thought the one good thing to come out of the Scottish Parliament would be an end to all the whinging, but no.

What nonsense! You only need to watch Newsnight (Kirsty Wark) or listen to Today (James Naughtie) to realise that the Scottish mafia is taking over the national media!
