Water dripping out of the exhaust so much so it it would fill a bucket, and so much steam it looks like a steam train. All cars do it but this was excessive.

I really really think this would be the best purchase for AT

Not very well, some common sense hit me yesterday, why I am even considering paying £100 a month in insurance when a something like a Ka or even a 1.2 Corsa would cost me £50?

For this reason I am now considering the Focus 1.6 only or the Astra G 1.6 8V or 1.4 16v, these three cars are all cheap to insure and a bit more grown up than a shopping trolley.

That said I have been working very hard to generate new business lately and it seems to be working so I might have a bit more cash to put towards the new car, but I am still sticking to my original budget.

The private market seems to be dead at the moment, I have found a few decent garages so I am checking their stock (via the internet) on a daily basis.

I am a named driver on my dads car I take that for a short spin once a week just so I don't forget how to drive :).

Insurance won't be an issue if you shop around. Toyota's are cheaper to insure than Fords as far as I can tell. All low miles, all should give you years of reliable motoring.
Try an insurance broker or run them through confused.com

I bet not one of them costs more than the 1.8 focus to insure, I imagine you'll do them for about £7/800 a year. Perhaps a bit more if you live in a poorer area. Just think of the bills you'll save, and the peace of mind you'll have not having to lie awake all night wondering if there's too much condensation coming from your exhaust.

Paid £70 for a new radiator for my Dad's, only thing it's needed in 126k bar the usual pads and stuff. £100 service at a Toyota garage.
The myth about Japanese cars being dear to run is just that. Now VW and Skoda I could tell you a thing or two about in that respect!

    No!
For the crash damage after the condensation has rotted out the pipes.

Check your insurance AT, make sure its covered for condensation induced RTA.
