If "same price bracket" means "somewhere between $US3,000 and $US100,000", yes.

    Hi,

Nope, it is not, however you asked:

"I'm quite happy for you to nominate an uber-deck which will beat my LP12, on a level support of my choosing."

I simply followed your challenge and nominated an ueber-deck.

    Hi,

Actually, the designer designed to play records as well as possible, with current technology. In the light of the fact that the smallest modulations on an LP are in the magnitude as the wavelenth of infrared light he felt a rather more heroic isoltation from the vagaries of the room was needed.

That turntable ignores being kicked is a result of this design, not it's aim.

That said, I am moderatly pleased that you can dance and jump on my suspended wood flooring without audibly effectig my turntable, thaks to a modified string suspension system.

Comparing the LP12 with a deck costing that much? Very good.

Some cars are faster than a Porsche turbo, but not many.

    Hi.

Ah come on, don't be a bad sport. You stated the challenge, i gave you an answer. Now quit whining because you don't like the outcome.

I could have nominated an Acoustic Solid Small Royal on a Townshend 3D Seismic Sink, which is more in keeping with the cost of an LP-12 and it would stopm it when both are placed on your speakers. But if you want to make grand proclamations and challenges I felt a grand answer much more in keeping with the tone of the discussion.

How do you know that? You are attempting to play "top trumps", but there is no sure footing, because you haven't heard my system.

You can suggest, but it won't happen...

My turntable is roughly the same age in design terms as the LP12, so I have no problems with "good old-fashioned". The problem I have is that the LP12s I've heard haven't inispired me to go out and audition one - even the ones I've liked, as the price-performance ratio isn't in their favour.

My turntable's "good enough" even though it's not anywhere near as good as some people's (obviously). The money I'm saving by NOT auditiioning a new TT can go on more important things like my cousin's wedding in Venice, and a holiday in the sun next year, since I've not had a holiday since 1992.

BTW - this whole thread now's beginning to remind me of a line out of Anne Fussel's kids book, "The banger boys"; Baz and Greg have nicked a car, and are ragging it round a roundabout:
"Round and round and round we go
    where we stop nobody knows"

Just like the arguments on here!

    A cop-out. Expand.

dom, the LP12 punches way, way above its weight. It was compared to a deck costing twice as much (the Simon Yorke) and found to be little different.

I wouldn't call 'vibration' a 'form of energy'.

I'm still in search of the mysterious resonances everybody was talking about a page or two ago.

From the world's least audiophilic person:

    I have an LP12/Ekos/Klyde.
    It sits on a cabinet.
It makes a nice noise, as good as the CD player.
As far as I can tell, it has no flabby/flatulent/boomy/whatever bass, or indeed any flabby/flatulent/boomy/whatever anything else.
It never need adjusting or fiddling with.
I'm sure there are better-sounding decks, but I haven't heard them, I don't go out of my way to hear them, and I don't care.

    So, why worry?

The law of diminishing returns sets in early, and bites very hard indeed. IOW, you need to spend megabucks to beat your TT, tones.

in the interests of fairness, its worth pointing out that there has been somewhat of a trend in recent years (on pink fish) for people to move on from the Linn LP12 to other decks.

TonyL moved from a fully speced LP12 to a N.A. Spacedeck, Joel moved from a variety of decks to a souped up Interspace, the list goes on, but I dont visit PFM often enough to list them all.

Im sure the LP12 sounds as good as it ever has, but we're in danger here of going from one extreme of LP12 bashing to the other.

Personally, Ive got mixed feelings about the old girl. I heard a fully speced new LP12 a while ago, and was very impressed with it. I heard an old one and was equally impressed. I think at about £400 used, its like hifi for free - they retain their value so well, and it looks like a great buy...but playing devils advocate you can get a Thorens used for a lot less, or an Interspace used for similar money.

but at £2-3K for a new one (depending on spec), Ive got to say its some 2-3 times more expensive than a NA Interspace, 30% more expensive than a Kuzma Stabi/Stogi S...etc..

The LP12 is a great sounding turntable, but you don't need to spend megabucks to beat it. Here are two decks that I've heard at home, in the same price bracket (c. 4 000 € with PSU), that beat it:

    • The Verdier La Nouvelle Platine (with this baby Verdier you would be able to hear what your Guy Lamotte arm is really capable of)
    • The Kuzma Stabi Reference

Devil, Do you seriously believe that the LP12 is competitive with the above mentioned turntables?

Agree with the Verdier, would swap Kuzma for Well Tempered or VPI. None of these would sit on Mana without sounding dreadful, then falling off.

Actually, the Platine Verdier I used to run sounded really nice on a Mana Reference table. Haven't tried the Nouvelle Platine, but as it shares feet and supension with its older sister, I see no reason why it shouldn't work on Mana.

I would never buy a new LP12 - I was fortunate that the Basel Linn man had this refurbished one going for half normal retail price, and at that price it was a good buy.

I have no opinion on either of those TTs.

Stereophile reckon the LP12 is competitive with the Simon Yorke, at more than twice the price, as pointed out on the previous page.
