    Design - Linn - LP12.

Three words I find hard to combine in a single sentence...

Not sure about the styling of the unidisk - I think it's quite bland.

The sacd reply is superb from this player and the dvd replay as good as any I've seen.

Not familiar with the Cyrus, I'm quite keen on their amps but for some reason never got round to hearing/watching any of their source components.

The problem with the unidisk isn't the styling you are paying for but the r 'n' d of designing something from the ground up. Whether this is worth the extra ? I have a Denon DVD2900 and it works well for me (and a lot cheaper than the Linn even though it impressed me when I heard it)

I thought it might be worth pointing out the truth about LP12s, rather than the leftfield opinions posted recently.

that it's based on something else?

(as is my own, a gyrodec, based on a transcriptor hydraulic reference, if I'm not mistaken.)

I really don't care about its design heritage: it's just a machine for playing records, to me, at least.

What it's based on is completely irrelevant.

It could be argued that the greatest sports car of all time is based on a VW beetle.

If you're going to comment on engineering why not learn some first? ISTR basic approaches to vibration, resonance and damping were O Level stuff, so everybody should have some grasp.

Anyway there's a mass of material available on the Internet, http://www.fabreeka.com/tech/faqs_basicsvibration.pdf is interesting simply because it touches on the type of stuff that affects a turntable albeit on an industrial scale.

An amusing nut. Perhaps a couple of our local nuts are fans?

Arthur seems to write a lot about the LP12 given it's ranking in his world...

The Ninja is a quieter LP12. The mods are tip-top secret.

Any product can be tweaked, Alex. Whether it's better, or worse, or the same as an ordinary LP12, I cannot say.

Honestly James, I don't think anyone with any sense would believe for a second the many very silly things that are/were said about the LP12 and by starting a thread about it again you're only inviting those same silly comments to be made again and then this thread will rapidly go the way of the last one.

The LP12 is undoubtedly an excellent TT, if a little expensive (new) compared to the competition. Quite why it polarises opinion so much is hard to understand.

    Michael.

If people start trolling this thread, I would imagine that the moderation team will swing promptly into action after only, say, 50 pages?

Rest assured that if this thread threatens to go the way of the last one it will be rapidly nipped in the bud :)

LP 12 is a good deck......not my cup of tea but. Simply sales of the numbers sold can't be all wrong. Shock horror I'm with the Devil on this one.

Like the Stereophile reviewer I've never heard one. I consider it a hole in my hi-fi experience.

    Hi,

I thought you did not read Mags or believe in anything they write anyway? Or is it only the case if they write stuff you don't like?

    Ciao T

    Hi,

Surely you meant to say Thorens deserve the recognition for designing it?

Based on past Linn Turntable "designs" I suspect like this:
