One thing which stands can't alter is the tonal balance.

Why not? They're going to resonate somewhere or other

    Hi,

Which makes perfect sense. Place the Aro on a more conventional deck and it is regarded as "bass shy". Place a more conventional high performance arm on the LP-12 and the bass is overblown. Given that Aro was developed on an LP-12 it makes perfect sense that designer would work on offsetting the sonic problem of the LP-12, so the resuting system actually is reasonable neutral, even if the parts are not.

Not that you would want to hear/or read that, mind you.

The LP12 does not have any additional bass emphasis, I have owned two examples for over 20 years, used with three different tonearms, and I've heard many more examples over the years, with many different tonearms.

The Aro is not "bass-shy" AFAICT.

Reading it is not a problem for me, I have seen it all before.

How can a stand "resonating" alter the tonal balance?

I thought that was the point of using different materials

I think the point of a stand is to keep the equipment as level and as vibration-free as possible. No stand could ever possibly alter the tonal balance.

If the stand is there to keep equipment vibration free then vibration must affect the sound. When the stand resonates it vibrates does it not, therefore this must affect the sound too. Else theres little point in using an 'audio' specific stand. Different materials resonate at different frequencies so you'll get a different sound out

"Affecting the sound" is not the same thing as "altering the tonal balance".

?! Ok, it affects the frequency content i.e. 'alters the """tonal balance"""'

More along the lines of reducing the noise floor.

If it resonates it still affects the noise floor (and everything else). Your argument was that it is there to reduce vibration, if its vibrating itself its not going to do that entirely and thus affects the frequency spectra.

I don't understand what you are saying, and I think that you possibly don't, either.

Mana (the stand I currently use) doesn't affect the tonal balance.

No, I do understand what I'm saying. Your mana thing is a metal frame, and I think glass? as the shelf. These both resonate. Alot. If you are saying that your rack isolates the system from air and floor vibrations, which affect the frequency spectra, than what exactly isolates it from the effect of your rack resonating?

Mana acts as a vibration sink. I don't think it actually generates any vibration of its own. Things standing on it may make it vibrate.

Using impressive phrases such as "frequency spectra" make it appear that you know what you are talking about.

Mana's effect on tonal balance is very obvious to those who hear it and very unobvious to those who don't. Either way, its a pointless argument.

Sorry, I actually have a degree in audio/acoustics, I do know what I'm talking about. My dissertation was on very similar effects, I'm afraid it is you that does not know what your talking about saying 'it doesn't generate any vibration of its own'. Nothing is a perfect sink, besides which, as soon as the energy reaches the floor a large part will be reflected back into the stand. Whether you are willing to accept it or not (which is entirely irrelavent) metal and glass resonate like hell at various frequencies and will pass this vibration straight up into the source with ease.
