I'm going on holiday for three weeks tomorrow. Was looking forward to it enormously....

But then I was made redundant earlier today, so I won't have anything like as good a time...

Issac, its just a f**king job you know what I mean?

There is always work for someone willing to work and like should be for living not for working.

I am seriously coming to this conclusion and once married in MAy I will be looking elsewhere for work, because right now the balance is all wrong.

    Don't worry about it.

Yeah but if you're older and have a mortage to pay etc being made redundant is a worry, for younger people like myself being made redundant is a bonus. You just get a load of cash and also get to do a new and exciting job.

Just try your best to enjoy your holiday, Gary is right when he says life is for living.

All well and good garyi, but everyone has bills to pay etc. and being made redundant must be one of the less pleasant experiences there is...and it will totally f*ck up Isaacs hols as he'll be thinking about getting a new job etc.

Yes, it does seem a bit odd to start drivelling on about work/life balance to somebody who's just lost their job...

You have yoof on your side. Good luck finding something new (and better, hopefully).

If you have the right qualifcations etc and you're good at your job there should be plenty of new jobs for you. Hopefully you will get enough reduncy money to live off while you are job hunting.

Its such a shame that the timing is so bad.

    isaac,
being a past master at the being made redundant thing (i always seem to choose places that are fun to work which inevitably means they end up going bust! ) i've this advice for you... enjoy your holiday, retail therapy is a great healer. 1st thing i did when i got made redundant last time was buy a naim nap 250 to cheer myself up :D.
I always tend to plan for the worst though and everything, loans, etc. has redundancy protection so that is a big worry off my shoulders. if you haven't got this sort of thing, my heart goes out to you but it really is worth the extra few quid a month in future.
still as i say have a good holiday, get drunk, get a tan, get laid, get a bar job and stay wherever you're going. you're a free man you lucky s.o.b.
    cheers

Cheers guys... I suspect that I won't desperately enjoy the holiday now...

Retail therapy is out, since I just spent on the S300 (which, if things don't go so well, may be up for sale soon)...

Hi Isaac - Sorry to hear about the redundancy. :( What exactly were doing at Vivadi? I was just wondering as I'm a subscriber to one or two IT jobs mailing list and have specified to be notified of programming jobs in the South West as my search criteria. Have noticed one or two hardware, embedded and real-time systems engineer jobs come up recently e.g. embedded C, VHDL programming/simulation that sort of thing - have seen jobs advertised mainly in the Bristol and Gloucester area. Not sure if this would be up your street or not, or if you are more a design specialist i.e. CAD/CAM?

BTW, where are you off to for your holiday?

Too true, but there is still unfortunately the need to "work in order to live" for most of us. The balance is all wrong for me at the moment too, but hopefully it'll lead to a bit more freedom sometime soon once the debts have been paid off and then maybe I'll go off traveling and pay my way through by doing the occassional odd job whilst on the road. ;)

Surely when you get married, that's when you have to start worrying about providing for the future and hence spend every/more waking hours at work - unless you plan not to have kids of course. ;)

This is a no brainer move - ALL my loans/debts are payment protected up the arse, as I've always been paranoid about losing my job (though unbelievably, it hasn't happened - yet). That might all change fairly soon due to "re-engineering" (read:DOWNSIZING) because some chump screwed up on the maths when they relocated us. They should start the cull with that dippy twont first - but then, it was some middle-management pleb no doubt, and look how long it took David Brent to get the push for being useless! But I digress.

Sorry to hear about the job, Isaac. You've earnt and paid for that holiday so do NOT let this bother you until you come back, since you're not looking for jobs while on holiday! (Or maybe you are?). Worry about it when you get back- you'll be more relaxed from the holiday and ready to start the job hunt.

My advice - take an apprenticeship as a plumber. Within the next five years there'll be a fair few retiring and hardly ANYONE is taking up the trade. With the number of people in the country growing, this means plumbers can print their own money. If I could drive, I'd have jacked this place in and done this myself. My mate Rob gets paid a shedload for it...

Nightmare Isaac :( - I'm there myself so can fully appreciate but, as the others have said, enjoy your holiday and use it as some time to think about what you REALLY want to do now.

Sometimes these experiences [redundancy] can be quite cathartic and you may actually discover exactly what you want from life.

Mind and bring us all back a stick of rock :D .

It is no fun to be ask to leave a job you enjoy suddenly. Been there twice. Once because I was warned early enough I manage to arrange time to study and take an exam. Second time took time out and while enjoying 'holiday' manage to find a job within weeks that is more enjoyable.

So keep the spirit up and things maybe turn out alright for you in the end.

    Best wishes.

Damn f***ing right! Again, if I could drive I'd have started up my own business a few years ago. Although I'd much rather be an electrician, as I don't really fancy smelly drains and unblocking u-bends containing human waste. :chunder: An equantaince said he knew an electrician who raked in over £100k last year before tax.

Yeah, or if you're that poor sod from Dynorod in early Feb 1983, when you went to unlock the main drains at Cranley Gardens and found human remains there - eeeeugh...

If you were an electrician, you could install all your own hifi spurs etc - cool as!
