Thanks for the link. It is open cell foam, which is a good thing. I'd triple it up and leave a space behind it. A small square room is a b.....d though, can you move back into the bigger room?

I'll have the option to use the lounge again if it doesn't work out, so we'll see. I quite like having a little den just for music though. Saves the nagger getting in the way of my electronica tunes. My new speakers are especially for near field anyway, btw.

How much of a space behind? I thought about using double sided sticky pads to mount them on the painted walls. This would give a gap of 4mm ish. Or do you mean a large gap?

...or a space NOT greater than the minimum depth of the foam.

    Enjoy your new room.

Thanks guys. I'll see what sticky pad options are available tomorrow. I'll probably end up stacking a couple per corner to get a cm or so clearance?

Actually isn't there some magic number for the space behind a 2" piece of foam? I thought it was 26mm or 28mm. I don't remember now. Anyway a slight gap gives better LF absorption, but it shouldn't be more than the depth of the foam.

I would suggest placing the back layer profile side to the wall to do the trick.

Is having a gap better than just using thicker foam?

The Auralex spray adhesive is REALLY good. Very different from some 3M spray I tried and much stronger (so you need less of it). Instead of coming out as a mist (like a hair spray) going everywhere including your lungs, the Auralex stuff is 'dry' and spiderweb like. Makes the job much easier and I wouldn't use anything else. A single can should be more than enough to do an average sized room.

A spray can of contact adhesive, the type that comes out like a spiders web costs less than £5 for 500ml. It will usually say somewhere on the can that it's for upholstery.

Not if you don't use too much adhesive and are gentle when pulling the foam off. It tends to leave a bit of residue on the wall though.

Mat, I'll try the adhesive you suggest next time.

Maplins spray adhesive is specifically for foam use on upholstery. Costs about 3 quid ;)

I ended up with loads of adhesive, I bought a couple of cans in advance then got two supplied with the treatments. When it came to installing I decided not to glue the panels anyway but to have them removeable and put them in frames.

As it was for upholstering I did use some of the spray to fabric wrap an old bass trap as an experiment. It was almost successful but I used stretchy fabric which didn't help.

On the cans it said to spray one surface for a semi-removable bond and both surfaces for a permanent one. This seemed about right as I tried it on some scrap foam pieces that were laying around. Is it similar with the Auralex glue?

Godfather, just clicked on your photobucket link

How did you decide upon which type of treatments to use and where to place them? Is it by trial and error, did you use some form of compter program or room measurement.

How big is the room, the speakers look very close to the walls. How do you get on with the neighbours ;)
