It appears to me that the younger generation favors a brighter crisper sound than the seasoned listner. Could it be the introduction of Digital during their childhood as opposed to someone who grew up with analog and tubes.
When I was kid Dad had a tubed Magnavox console with TT, tuner and TV. For the first 20 years of my life I knew nothing but tube sound. I seem to levitate torwards the tube sound. My sons who grew up with their portable CDP,computers and video games have a different view. Interesting, any ideas.

    difference in auditory response curve?....

maybe it's what they hear on the radio that drives their sound preference....

I'm 33 and don't like CD. It has nothing to do with frequency response though.

I suspect a preference for digital music amongst many 'young' people would relate to the flexibility of digital recording - email it, on your PC, on your mobile phone, on your laptop, your mp3 player, ipod etc.

I'm 32. I just like good music. I've yet to hear it on a reasonably priced (as in under £10k) vinyl setup and mp3.

I ought to set my turntable up accurately with a good cartridge etc...

At the moment it doesn't sond as good as the cdp. I think its only because its not set up very well.

For now I use the cd player for simplicity.

    edit

how SHOULD a thorens td 160 super stack up agaisnt a modded arcam a5?

the cartridge is a 1006 some thing (sorry uncle ants can't remember what now....SME?)/blackwidow arm

    anyone?

it depends on what you want.

if you want start/stop bass, then cd will probably deliver it better.

it you wnat grain free treble and acoustic space around performers then vinyl should give it to you.

i find vinyl more natural sounding, and for me thats the thing.

Either get a 1012GX stylus, or depending on the arm, the cheapy favourite Denon DL110, or an ML tipped Audio Technica........... Black Widow, wasn't that ultra low mass though? God it's so long since I played with these things...

Lots of online tips on setting up a TD150/TD160 to great effect. It's a good deck if you don't overload the structure with bells and whistles...

Thirty years ago I was a real Linn/Naimie. I loved the excitement of the sound and like certain reviewers of the time (Chris Frankland anyone?) I couldn't give a hoot that it was un-natural tonally.

Then I started going to classical concerts and The Proms....... I also discovered the joys (and raw intensity) of a live jazz group in my local pub and the rest is history.

If memory serves correctly it was a 1006 stylus fitted into a Roksan Corus body (The Corus is effectively a modified Goldring 1000 series cartridge and the styli are interchangeable between the two), on an Infinity Black Widow arm (SME fit).

Get it all set up right before worrying about the stylus - I would anyway.

i don;t really care - at home i listen to lossless pc. in the car and at the gym it's mp3, when i'm round friends or clubbing it's cd or vinyl. at the end of the day if the music is good then the format it comes on doesn;t matter a toss to me.
recently been thinking about trying my hand at dj-ing - that's been put back thanks to my new mistress - a temperamental japanese red head with some dirty and expensive habits. but if i do go ahead i'll be going with cdj's not 1210's purely because i can source music more easily that way.
