Analog optical audio (surprised the hell out of me!)

I took delivery of a ye-olde Pioneer CLD-1750 Laserdisc player yesterday, as I'd inadvertently bought a copy of Duran Duran's "Decade" that turned out to be NTSC, and, err, my other player is a bottom-feeder with only PAL playback.

SO I had a play about last night. I'd already tried the disc on Henryt's big DVD/LD combi deck, so I was putting my player through it's, err, paces, and thought I'd have a laugh and listen to "Planet earth" in analog stereo (NTSC laserdiscs usually allow you to have either digital or analog soundtracks, that you can switch between).

Well, the digital track was louder, but also sounded more crude; the analog tracks had a little bit less detail but the bass grooved better. There was pretty much ZERO static or crackles (unlike my 1982 first UK pressing of "Raise the Titanic" which sounds like a crackly old battered 78!).

I'd love to know what other music would sound like on big old clunky 12 inch optical analog discs... I might bung in U2's "Rattle and hum" later and find out :) Pity my Madonna's "Blonde ambition" laserdisc is PAL, and thus only digital sound....
