Thinking of getting either one of the following:

    MJ Acoustics Ref 150
    Velodyne SPL 1000 II

They're about the same price in Oz (about $2300-2500AUD). This actually makes the price of the MJA quite ridiculous (1000UKP)!

I really like the Velodyne, but it's low pass x'over only goes down to 40Hz. Although my speakers are -3db at 48Hz, I may end up getting one that goes lower than 40Hz in the future. I like the MJA as well, and the low pass goes down to 30Hz, but is just a rip-off here, tbh.

How low would my speakers have to go before this becomes a problem?

I have an integrated and no AV amp, so I don't think I can use the 80Hz high pass.

40Hz lowpass is plenty low enough. If you had an active xover (ie with an AV amp) it can be beneficial to set it higher but I can't really see any need for having it lower. My Dynaudios go down 38Hz (-3dB) and I use 40Hz lowpass (the lowest setting) on my MJA Pro50 with no problems.

Incidentally, it doesn't matter if there's some overlap between your speakers and sub. In fact, it can be beneficial for evening out the room response.

Unless your principal room resonance falls within the overlap region as mine does. And let's not get onto out-of-phase subs - that sounds plain weird and causes as many problems as it solves.

Nice little sub though the MJA is, your should find the SPL1000 to be in a different league. Over in the UK they are £550 and £950 respectively.

Also, I don't see why you can't use the 80Hz high pass filter - you should just be able to run one set of speaker cables into it and then another set on to the speakers.

It would be an interesting experiment to see which handles the 50-80Hz range better - your speakers or the sub.

Almost a no-brainer i think. I just need to dem them side-by-side, which may be hard.

I think it only has line-level outs, otherwise I probably would.

If I had pre/pwrs it would prolly work fine.
