I love "Blues for the red sun" and "As the circus leaves town", I only discovered them about a year ago, and they are one of my favorite bands to blast at home or in the car when im in for some no nonsense balls out stuff but with interesting riffs/tempo, it appeals to me in quite a basic but satisfying way.

I think Blues for the red sun is aswsome, particularly the first 5 tracks.

Some how havent taken to "sky valley" so much so far, which many believ to be the best? I've yet to get "wretch".

Prefer to listen to KYUSS than Queens of the Stoneage personally. Also like mark laneghan, interesting to see how Homme, laneghan etc are all linked.

I used to love this album.. it's not that I don't like it now... some git nicked it years ago and I haven't thought much about it till now. Must get another copy!

Thought the last couple of QOTSA albums were a bit weak. I think Rated R has some cracking tunes - Monsters in the Parasol for one. The Screaming Trees had some good albums too, but again, haven't listened to them much recently. It's been a bit grungey in here lately!

Rated R is an excellent album. Songs For The Deaf could've been, but far too bloated really for my tastes, cut it down by half an hour and it would've been much better.

Sky Valley is my fav, Blues has some good ones but tails off a bit I reckon. I prefer them to QOTSA too. Rated R is great though. Like Songs for the deaf except those f'in radio bits, what the hell are they for?! And Dust by screaming trees is great too :)

Kyuss !!. Sky Valley is the one for me. Huge stoner rock epics with 'recorded in a cave' ambience. Excellent in a Metal way.

Never really understood the attraction of QOTSA. Not quite a proper band and not quite a collaboration and not really groundbreaking. Entertaining live but I'd never bother at home and the last couple of albums have been totally generic MTV fodder. The stuff on the last Desert Sessions CD comp (9/10 I think) was far superior IMO - esp the tracks with PJ Harvey.

Kyuss still get very regular plays at my house, along with most of the related bands too. QOTSA, obviously, despite the popular tendencies of the last record or two, as well as Fu Manchu who Brant Bjork joined for a while after leaving Kyuss.

I really like John Garcia's voice a lot and have kept up with all his projects since Kyuss split (Unida, Slo-burn, Hermano), with Hermano being a fave because I actually got to see them play live. Not as heavy as his previous stuff with Kyuss, but the Duna Records website is worth looking at, too, as Brant Bjork has done some great work since the Kyuss days.

"Songs for the deaf" is too long, too repetitive, and too boring...

Kyuss' "Wretch" on the other hand, rocks. Don't know any of their other stuff - only discovered this album around a year ago...

I don't get that, they're a fairly consistent line up and its not the most groundbreaking thing ever but why does it have to be? Rated R is a great piece of warped psyche rock/metal. They understand the power that beats from string bends and dodgy panning etc. have when your stoned, the simple things that mess with your head, I like that. Shocking recording though and I didn't think much of the first album or the one that just came out.

But yeah, Kyuss recordings are ace, blatantly just some guys stoned off their tits falling over in a desert or something :D

It's a series of (originally tape) releases of Josh Homme and his mates just playing in some hideout in the desert. Lineups vary but Mark Lanegan is on at least one of them, Polly Harvey sings on some tracks, Josh plays guitar and drums depending on the track. Masters of Reality and Perfect circle are on some. I've only heard vols 7,8,9 and 10 and the song quality can be a bit up and down but the most recent one was very good indeed. Ill shut up, I'm having a Surfer Rosa session.

To be fair, what ruined it for me in the end was that the period of time when I owned a TV coincided with MTV2 overkill on songs for the deaf. I quite liked the first record and I saw them just after Feelgood Hit Of The Summer came out but I've never made it all the way through Rated R. Then they went through a bunch of drummers and Nick and Josh fell out and Songs for the Deaf was dull and long...

If Kyuss, then what about Melvins ?

I saw them last year. Recommend me an album (LYSOL ?). Mid set, David Yow suddenly appeared, then stagedived wearing some kind of dress / toga affair.

Thanks for the info John. The Masters have a couple of awesome albums (IMO). The first (Blue Garden), and Sunrise on the Sufferbus. Ginger Baker's drumming on Sufferbus is fantastic.

ATP? I was there :) Great it was. TBH though I'm no Melvins expert, the LPs are horribly expensive. I've got a bit of the trilogy someone copied for me and Bullhead which is meant to be one of the first really good ones they did. I just look on amazon to see what people like then see what I can find on LP that doesn't cost £60+

QOTSA are "repetitive", "boring", "weak" and "not quite a proper band" ??. Are we really talking about the same group ??.

I'd agree that some of the LPs are too long [aren't ALL LPs guilty of some filler ??], but all the ones I've got have some excellent songs on them. I think they're a great band - and I don't listen to a lot of rock music.

I'll listen out for some Kyuss and "Desert Sessions".

    Nope.

CD has led to a lot of overlong albums (and a record company expectancy of long albums) but IME much of what comes out the independednt sector is exactly as long as it needs to be, all killer no filler.

Try 'Liar' or'Goat' by The Jesus Lizard. 30 mins a piece and not a wasted note on either.

Better still, Fugazi's In On The Kill Taker: A 45 minute classic in any era.

Yes, you're not wrong there. I would rather be listening to an album and think "bugger, is that it finished already?" after 45 minutes when it's a good 'un, than "how much longer is this going to drag on?" when it's not. It's good that the space is there on the disc when needed (live album, rare tracks added, genuinely good album), but too many cds are filled to their limits for the hell of it.

Sure, but that doesn't make the great music on the CD any worse. Even the greatest LPs will have tracks on them that don't match the standard of the others...You can always skip the rough tracks.

You got the wrong end of the stick there Paul. 75% of my albums are on cd, and it was them I was referring to. I have more than a few LPs with varying degrees of filler :)
