Just been wondering if any of you guys are into watches? Seeing as we all seem to be fairly keen on engineering and the like, I thought some of you might also have some interesting mechanical timepieces?

I've been collecting for 5 years. The crown jewels are a Jaeger LeCoultre Master Reserve de Marche (steel with black dial) and a Blancpain 2000 Series (100-hour power reserve in yellow gold). I've attached some pics.

I'm really after a Chopard LUC 1.96, or the classic Breguet six-eater with power reserve with moonphase (3130/3137 - £20-25k though  )

A little. I look a lot but can't afford to buy! My elder daughter is a hostess at the Uhrenmesse, and she gets free tickets, so I can get in. My greatest pleasure is seeing a set of PP Star Caliber 2000 and reflecting on the fact that this is where the graphs of conspicuous consumption and certifiable lunacy intersect.

I have a 1972 Rolex GMT Master (great watch), but I'd love a J-LeC Master Compressor Geographic. There is, as you say, the small matter of CHF9750...

My old boss is a collector and he knows folk in the trade. Substantial discounts are available - he got a friend a CHF7200 IWC Portugieser for CHF5500.

Financial constraints at the moment mean that I resist. My everyday watch is a special ed. Omega seamaster (black dial). Was getting a 2nd hand Rolex Submariner but changed my mind. Did have a 2 tone Datejust for a while but not really practical. Of the Rolex Id go for a daytona. Of the JLeC's Id like a Dualmatic in a two tone finish.

Well tone, you are swiss after all - I would be shocked if you didn't have a decent watch!

The star calibre is more a museum piece/flagship/showpiece of patek's skill, rather than something practical we can all aspire to. $5m right?

Yep, the JLC master comp. geo. is a very nice watch (if a bit sporty for me - I prefer classic dress watches). I prefer the original Geo though. Very complicated, thoroughly engineered and good value (all things considered ;) ) at CHF10k, IMO.

Re the portugieser - they're poor value IMO. I don't care how much they alter/adjust/finish the movemement, its still a Valjoux 7750. Dial work is also poor. They are very pretty though, if a little thick for my liking. I'd take a Blancpain flyback over it any day of the week.

Had an IWC GST in titanium once - piece of junk IMO - sold it after six months...

T-bone, you can't really compare JLC & rolex in the same sentence. They're a world apart in just about every concievable department. I wish people researched Rolex watches more before buying one.

The seamaster is very good vfm - very little out there than can touch it in terms of build & finish for the price.

Er, no, British/Irish/Australian, but not Swiss (the daughters are).
    $7.5M
I like watches with the two time zone feature. The GMT Master is the perfect no-frills watch, my companion for 30 years. Of course, the ultimate time zone watch is Glycine's mammoth Airman 7, with 4 time zones.

Maybe not, but i do like some of the Rolex watches and for right or wrong they are in a similar price range and I do buy watches that I wear.

The Seamaster is the ideal watch for me. Ive had it 3 years, worn it daily and it still looks mint. Ive compared it to the Submariner and I think its substantially better made. It doesnt grab attention, nobody thinks its a copy and has a certain 'feel', I doubt I'll ever buy another everday watch.

    Ain't that the truth

If Rolex knocked £2,500 of the submariner's rrp, it might start to represent value.

Have you used the Helium decompression valve in the bath yet? ;)

Must be getting on for 46mm wide?

I see patek put the price up!

    Correct.
    And the rest! See:

Of Star Caliber 2000? I think it came in at $7.5M. Of course, at that altitude it's somewhat academic to the likes of me...
Useless Info. Dept. One of the sets went to the Southern Hemisphere - someone got a look at the star map on that set.

Tee hee - I have a Lorus Kinetic bought from - tee hee again - Elizabeth Duke! It's 4 years and 7 months old though, so was bought before the Dukesters became totally synonymous with "chav" :)

I also have an early 80s Omac digital (still working!) and a 1994 Casio digital which is still going strong on its original "7 year" battery, and, err, THIRD strap! When it came to restrapping it last time, I bought the aforementioned Lorus :)

I also have an 400 day "anniversary" clock - the PROPER windup version. It's fairly reliable for an Ebay purchase of such a fragile mechanism :)

Oooh and I though my Incursore was big enough.
TBH I'm a bit wary of wearing now it as it attracts attention, in good and bad ways.

I have a pretty simple but mechanical watch. An Oris Artelier Complication. It's not an Omega, let alone IWC or so. But it's mechanical, and it's swiss :)

after many years of being of the opinion that watches were the work of a conspiracy designed to keep everyone paranoid over how long things were taking i caved in and decided i needed to have a watch - i wanted it to be water resistant to 100m, not require winding or a battery and to have an alarm and stopwatch. i eventually found one of these.

on e-bay for 75 quid. does everything i want and looks good - imho too.
    cheers

I like Oris actually, well made & good VFM. A great "starter" mechanical watch IMO.

Miles from everywhere but very near perfect.
Still got my ol' mans 50/51 Omega Constellation,it seems to work well and keeps good time.

I think he paid about £90 pounds for the watch which must have been a lot of money 55 years ago when Mullard ECC 83's were about 50p and KT66's less than a £1.00.

Support Oris!! (I live in the village where it has its HQ). The watches are quite nice too. Big to-do a while back when Ralph Schumacher visited (it makes a Ralphie timepiece).
