They are supposed to sound stunning, allthough they only work well if your records are absolutely spotless as the lasers can't distinguish between dirt and the record groove.

General opinion over the years has always been that they're no better than an average conventional turntable, and are not worth the money. As Michael says, they also have problems with anything but very clean vinyl. ELP recently started a marketing campaign, including lots of advertising, and now the mags seem to think these decks are really good. I wonder why?

Impressive engineering feat, to be filed under "Interesting but pointless" I suspect.

I want to see someone build a CD player with a mechanical pick-up instead of a laser - that would be an engineering feat (and I can just see the reviews waxing lyrical over how 'analogue' it sounded  ). All you'd need would be a really, really small needle, and something to strip the transparent plastic coat of the CD so your needle could go directly into the pits. Easy :D

What does the laser do does it produce an analgue signal which is modulated to the RCA outputs or does it produce a digital signal which requires a DAC? If so what is the point in it as dosn't all the problems of CD exist?

I've built one. Just trying to iron out some small design issues:

The VTA is incorrect for the disc.

I wonder if it plays silver discs too. If it did then it would make a pretty neat 'Universal' player or transport.

The lazer turntable needs a phono stage. There is a version that goes up to line level. It produces an analog signal. It is supposed to get rid of the problems & limitations of a vinyl record player. This include mechnical stylus wear, tracking distortion, arm/cartridge resonance, mistraking, cartridge resonance, groove tracking etc. It is suppose to be able to read fine changes in the groove, better than a stylus tip. It suppose to handle, scratches & warps. The records to have to be clean. There seems to be people happy with it.

I have never heard one. Must get one to add to the collection, I'll wait to one pops up cheap.

I guess it probably does sound quite good then but like others said the records will need to be in top condition. This for me defeats the object as half the fun of vinyl is picking up old records cheaply. I am not convinced it will outperform a £7500 traditional player either.

Why does it defeat the object? Records will perform better when in tip top condition & clean. It seems that some users of this deck have used it with charity shop records to very good effect. Cheap records can be in top condition. This record deck seems to work with less than mint condition records. The records do have to be clean which is not a bad thing. Lack of wear & tear from a stylus is a very good thing.

A Better record player will make you records sound better. By reducing the faults of a vinyl playing system you will get a better sound. That is what all the high end turntable maker are trying to do.

The major question is still in how it compares to your favourite high turntables.

Obviously, when placed the correct way up the VTF will also be correct.

Would work better if the disc was spinning surely.
