He needs to do this because pats of Europe are basically doing apple for the DRM thing.

Apple are in a bind with the big four as mentioned in the text.

All rather difficult.

 

apple want to keep people buying on itunes, linkedto ipods vis drm, they dont want people buying on itunes and using other hardware as thats where their real margins are.

 

Well if you do a bit of research you might find differently.

People do not buy iPods because they are desperate to purchase music from iTunes, infact the stats are something like 20 odd songs per iPod out there. Thats not a lot at all.

Apple have shipped around 65 million iPods, if people were filling their iPods with purchased music from iTunes then there would have been many thousands of tunes per iPod sold.

So Apple have other reasons not to open the DRM, and I think its pretty well explained by Jobs, and many other sources on the net.

Long and short is iTunes music makes pretty much no money for Apple, iPods do the combination is helpful but the user interface and scrollwheel are why the iPod is popular, it will continue to sell even if DRM is lifted.
