Just happened to be glancing through my mail yesterday and I noticed that I had been sent a copy of Hi-Fi+ (issue 29). I put it aside to read later and forgot about it.

Anyway, I took it out today and gave it a quick skim through. Just thought I'd post that it's quite a decent rag is Hi-Fi+.

Oh, nothing in particular. I just thought you guys might be interested.

Some really dodgy looking gear in this months rag, must have been reviewed by Jason Hector :D

    What did they say?

Speaker manufacturers have given up producing accurate transducers. They certainly know their onions, if not their hi-fi.

Would I assume from this that they have a review of Ironbridge power station (and possible uses thereof)?

Are you being all coy because your whatsits got a good review? I hesitate to point out that they don't write adverse reviews in HiFi+: it is the hi-fi equivalent of Hello! magazine.

Better a good review than a bad one, though.

    Nice paper.

It's not out for another 10 days.

Speaking as a connoisseur of book odour, i have to say that hifi+ is extremely palatable, and scores highly.

Why can't they put it on the shelves if it's already "done" then?

James - HiFi+ review policy is a good one IMO. They do write bad reviews, they just never publish them. They get given back to the company though.

Probably the best compromise between impartial reviewing and keeping the adverisers happy.

    Michael.

Yes. Not perfect, there were some minor negs, but pretty good.

A few months ago I asked Roy Gregory, the editor, if they were doing a review of a certain expensive tube amp from the US. He told me that they had received one for review but hadn't liked it enough to review it favourably. So whereas Hi-Fi+ don't like to write bad reviews, they will only review equipment that they like.

Paul Messenger is pretty straight and has reviewed many hundreds of speaker systems. His reviews tend to be more 'balanced' than some of the others.

Still, Devil, thanks for hesitating before pointing that out. Sweet of you.

I'll be uploading a PDF of the review onto my web site. Sadly, this won't have the delicious Hi-Fi+ odour.

Well I didn't hesitate for very long.

Agree about Paul Messenger. He's a Naim/Mana user, by the way.

Go on then, give us a link to your website.

Paul Messenger, likes everything, everybody, and herbs. His enjoyment of the latter insures the former alledgedly.

With such a jovial nature, how could he possibly be negative about anything?

I'd like to see a new web based publication, possibly called HiFi Guardian, that does nothing but slag off overpriced crap, featuring extensive and detailed negative reviews. Who's up for it? Any idea's for the first issues equipment reviews?

Fabulous Graham, you writing style has just the neccessary level of edge that we are looking for. Can I offer you the post of clasical editor? I fancy getting Tones on board for the Tweaks section, and maybe Wolfgang can do the technical stuff.

We need a web designer, a host, and enough volanteers to go out and get home dems of overpriced garbage.

Maybe WM would be kind enough to submit some of his cables for appraisal?

i get a little uncomfortable when manufacturers start plugging their kit on forums like this one. From what i've seen it's only 7th V that overtly do this. For example avondale keep a relatively low profile on the naim and pf site.

Coy plugs for hifiplus reviews in forthcoming issues almost make one think twice about buying it.
