I imagine David is suggesting that heavy oxidation on the contacts will result in an increase in the impedance and therefore
reduced current carrying capacity within the circuit.

rusty contacts will do that. A tad of smegma from normal use over the years wont.

    wrong again.

I can test circuit impedance on a socket using my Megga MFT1552
then clean the contacts on the plug and re test, the result is
    a reduced impedance.

What I have not said is that this will produce an audible difference,
merely that it will make a difference to the current that can flow within the circuit.

    Yes it will.

Polish the contacts up so they are bright and shiny.

    You DO notice the difference..

Well, I am reltively new to all this and I didn't even take physics at O level but just by way of observation:

When we took the caravan out a couple of weeks ago( yes, sorry, I'm one of them), having not used it for about six months we had all sorts of funny things going on with the lights. Now, a quick celan up of all the bulbs' contacts and the plug/socket at the car end sorted things out perfectly. Ok, so we are talking about 12v rather than 240v but the currents are also much lower. Oxidation makes a significant difference in this simple electrical system.

Having said all that, I havn't been moved to shine up my mains yet!

    Any non-contentious benefits? er, no.

If you have mains fuses, try cleaning the power socket fuse and its socket. Turn off the house switch first, of course. Safety first.

No unfortunatley it continues to be a pointless cause of debate.

Try it and see what you think!

I don't know why some members are so anti. I shoiuldn't have thoiught it was that provocative.

again? where was the first time? :S

I don't hear any change in sound after a clean. Maybe my pins aren't grubby enough.

I don't believe this is ever going to be significant. How much reduction in impedence is there, generally?

In any case, my plug pins are not subject to "heavy oxidation".

Why don't you clean them? Have a good listen to a particular work, one with plenty of dynamics, clean the L and N pins of a component, listen again to the same work. Then clean the earth pin, listen again. Tell us if you hear any differences. If you are prepared to clean the socket contacts (wrap some emery paper round a thin file or similar, having ensured that the socket is isolated), the better the test.
