oh man. sorry to hear that. So you need a single 2258 dual concentric 10" drive unit?

TBH thats going to be quite tricky to find as you probably know.. Im sorry to hear it dude.

Do you have an old pair of speakers to use in the interim?

    Good luck
    cheers

    Hi Chris,

I think it's a 2558 I need. I've emailed Tannoy. Let's see what they say. As you say they are not easy to come by. Lockwood can source a re-conditioned unit but they are not cheap:(.

Andy, it wasn't. It was some Bhangra track called "Bass Test" or something equally stupid. She wasn't actually in the listening room, so really turned the volume up. She basically treated them as well as she treats the D700, but they can take the punishment.

Lockwood have just quoted around £140 to recone it. Which isn't as bad as I was expecting.

Dev - ouch indeed! Would it not be worth getting BOTH drivers reconed, as surely this'd make a more-balanced pair?

I'm paranoid about someone blowing my Rega Ela mk1 bass drivers - they're made of unobtainium!

I hope you're making your daughter cough up for this?

I blew the bass driver of a Spendor Sp1 many years ago - believe it or not it was a Gang Starr track playing on a Garard 301 with oil damped SME 3009 arm through a Quad 33/405 combo.. We were seeing how loud it would go before the editors next door came and complained (we were in sound transfer at Auntie Beeb..).
Nobody complained, apart from maintenance who had to fix it :D

Leonard, she was thinking along similar lines. She decided to turn them up very loud so that she could hear the music while having a shower next door. She admits it was far too loud to be the same room as the speakers.

Dom, I took both speakers to Lockwoods and it seems the "good" one also needs attention, we heard a rattle through it when it was fed a test signal. Also, due to the age of the cones, they may well sound different, so both will be reconed.

This is very sensible advice IMO. I always get the pair replaced if one goes (as I did with my Signums). You could sell the good woofer on eBay to help reduce the cost of course.....

Glad yer getting it sorted Dev.

Maybe cleaning the kitchen and bathroom with a toothbrush would be a suitable punishment?

Good one Penance - even better would be to make her clean it with her anus (if you've seen "Duece Bigelow Male Gigelow" you'll understand the joke ;)).

Seriously now, good work Dev - what do they do in a recone job - do they have to replace the cone as well, or just the surround/voice coil?

    Hey, no problem DT:).

Dom, the cone and VC are a single assembly. AFAICT, reconing involves removing the old cone/VC from the driver unit and gluing on a new one. I've been told that these speakers should sound as good as new after about a 150hours to free up the rear suspension (NO, HE WASN'T TALKING ABOUT MY BMW:)).

Regarding the punishment, she feels guilty enough as it is and has offered to pay for the repairs but she is generally a well behaved child, so I don't know. I think she'll take better care of them now. She normally abuses the D700s on the main HiFi, which can take far more abuse than these 25 years old units connected to my second system..

My two Tannoy SRM 10B bass drivers went dead at the same time.

When your bass driver was blown was it completely dead, no sound at all? The two bass drivers on my Tannoy's SRM10B went dead simultaneously after using a noisy equalizer.

I think the bass was hugely distorted and there wasn't much of it. I don't think it went completely dead. However, it was nearly 3 years ago, so my memory of it is a little vague.
