Should I fully mode up the RB250 that I've got or get something else, say the Roksan Tabriz, Zeta, Helius Orion or . . . any other suggestions? £450 max. second hand. Arm board isn't an issue.

    Hi DigDat...

I had an Elite Rock, the guy I bought it off had a lot of talks with Max at Townshend and went for an Rega RB700 with custom Townshend armboard and a stack of Rega spacers. Apparently Max likes the bearings on the Rega.

The current Townshend arm looks to be a much modified Rega so I guess that's a clue as to what Max thinks.

    Hi Digdat

have a look at this: http://www.audiomods.co.uk/

If I didn't have an SMEIV this is the route I'd have gone. Johniebaby over on wigwam has had an arm done and is delighted. I got to see his and it certainly looks the buisness.

    cheers philip

    Hi Rob,

The Townshend arm is a rebuilt Rega arm. He does like their bearings.

I have an OL1 on my Rock III. I would recommend one of those, a Technoarm or an AudioOrigami modified RB250 as a sound starting point.

The front end damping trough means you get a lot out of your arm, so whilst a 'silly money' arm will sound superb you can get a fantastic sound out of something more modest. What is worthwhile is ensuring that the effective mass of the arm you choose is well matched to the cartridge.
