Most of you are in love with sound for its own sake, not as a medium for recreating music as realistically as possible... :JPS:

    Hi-fi population is divided:

The Procedure-Oriented Group: Espouses particular media - analog, vinyl, tube, monophony, two-channel, triode, cone, etc. - and strives for technical perfection and elegance via those media. Tends to reject "advances" as unnecessary.

The Goal-Oriented Group: Tries for realistic reproduction of the sound source. Auditions and accepts or rejects "advances" - long-playing record, stereo, multichannel, digital, electrostatic, etc. as they emerge.

The Sensation-Oriented Group: This is the group of writers who "laud products for their euphonic distortions (richness, sweetness, and subtlety), trash them for their accuracy (realistic sound is always brash and offensive to the audiophile's delicate sensibilities), and substitute personal opinions for assessments of accuracy." This group wants a sound that manipulates the distortion that is inherent in both the non-acoustic sound sources and the reproducing equipment in such a way that it provokes ill them an emotional response.

I am goal oriented, what about you... :latte:

I'm the sort of person who thinks a large group of humans can be neatly pigeonholed into three distinct types. What about you?

    I think that's a slightly loaded question António ;)

I'm pretty sure that most people would categorise themselves as "goal-oriented" out of your 3 choices. People who you might put into either of your other categories would, in their opinion, be getting the most realistic reproduction of the sound source. I'm sure that's what everyone is really striving for with HiFi. Some people think that's achieved with LPs, valves and horns - others think it's with multichannel SACD/DVD-A, digital processors, 500W solid state amps + monitors and subs. Neither is wrong and neither is right :)

    Michael.

Not forgetting the music-orientated group, whose members hear something that they like, buy it and live happily ever after and let those other three groups chase their respective tails.

    so antonio to paraphrase...

group 1 curmudgeonly old stick in the muds.

    group 2 rational human beings.

group 3 bitter people trying to justify crap equipment.

hmmm which one shall i be in....

i'm with the devil's sentiments on this one and probably a bit of all 3.

i would say that there are those who take joy in tweaking their equipment as an end in itself. that;'s not to say that they don;t enjoy the music their equipment makes just that they also get enjoyment from tinkering in their sheds or platering blu-tak everywhere. And there is nothing wrong with that.
    cheers

We keep ourselves to ourselves, only emerging occasionally to be rude about Eupen cables and green pens.

    Of course it is... :p

Of course they cant. I copied this from another forum, originally it was from Stereophile, I think it is good food for though, or for a laugh, or both, who cares... :JPS:

Actually I am with the third group when there are compromises to be made, wich is always... :latte:
