AV Help please!

Evening all, long time no post on my behalf, though i've not been averse to the odd lurking session
Your assistance please - our ancient VCR has just taken to chewing up tapes as opposed to playing them
Looking for recomends on a budget VCR (as a 'stop gap' perhaps) or info on whats out there interms of DVD (re) recorders - not looking for top of the range stuff - we don't have surround sound and it'll only be used for recording anf the odd rental or bought tape / disk playback?

Any assistance gratefully rec'd

Spotted at AV Forums 25/10/06:

Panasonic VCR NV-FJ615 in immaculate condition, this has been used for no more than 8 hours from new. Cost £40 + £5 Delivery

I'd go for separate DVDR and VCR rather than an all-in-one unit.
