I am currentley using a yamaha e800, but would like to utilise some power amps I have lying around to drive the centre and rears. I would appreciate any suggestions for a used, straight processor as cheap as possible. I do not need more than 5.1 capability.

    thanks

why? the 800 can output all 5.1 channels seperately (or at least mine can). if you want a pure processor then lexicon are hard to beat for av performance - pricey, though there are a few bargains about if you don't mind them being a few years old without the latest bells and whistles.
    cheers

Mine came without instructions, so I was not sure whether you can bypass the internal three channel power amps. I effect I want run the 800 into my pre amp/power for front speaker duties, and send the centre and rear signals to two other power amps. I suspect the lexicon will be out of my price range. I don't listen to av anywhere near as much as my stereo setup but wanted to see if there was much difference in quality using outboard amps.

just send the preouts of the dspe800 into your power amps (or if your main power amp doesn't have 2 sets of inputs, put the front preouts of the '800 into the preamp and set the volume to 12 'o' clock)

    rodrat,
if you look where you plug in the front 2 channels (to your pre) you should see another 4 pre-outs for rear surrounds, center and sub woofer. if you connect your power amps to these and then connect the relevant speakers to the power amps then you should get what you want.
    cheers

    Thanks for the replies.

Makes sense when somebody explains. How much do cyrus av5's go for? I like the idea of reducing the size of the processor.

Is this the owner's menu for your unit?

Maybe you should read the instruction first to see if it has all the facilities you need before changing to another processor. It seems to be well rated by some in ZG forum. I am using Tag processor. If this is what you think you will be interested in the future there are few people here who have this too.

The Cyrus AV's have bass management issues (sorry design features  ) with DTS and small speakers. Small speakers

So in my case, where I have THX speakers, it's completely worthless.

Tag AVR32 processors can be had for peanuts (compared to their new price) these days and they were always very highly regarded.

About the Cyrus AV5, it doesn't have DPLII if that matters to you. Probably not since the Yammy E800 doesn't have it either.

It can be upgraded to PLII for £200 or upgraded to the latest AV8 for £300.
