    pennance,
i heard a pair of avondale monoblocks fronted by a avondale'd MF the one preamp and a fully naimed lp12 on a stack of mana through linn isobariks. as such the only comment i can make about this system is that it played certain bits of music incredibly well. very dynamic, loud and agile. detail retrieval was very good and with the right music there was a lot of emotional involvement. however feed it a recording it didn't like and it could be harsh, unforgiving and downright painful at times. what caused this i'm unsure of, it could be the turntable, the amps, the briks or the stands however the fact that it could do things well means that there is a lot of promise to all parts of the system and that maybe there were other issues. setup, warmup, cables? whatever. ask about over on pfm if you haven';t already as you'll find more people who have lived with them day in day out. my verdict would have to be a go for it but be careful what you partner them with. certainly the support les gives out seems to be second to none in the diy amp arena.
    cheers

The Avondale isn't bad, far better than the naim gear, but as Ju says, it needs carefull partnering, a Shearne, isn't the ideal partner Andy, IMHO. WM

the shearne isnt ideal, full stop!:(

but as part of an upgrade path with intent of a better pre in the future.........

OK, basicaly, would a shearne as pre with the avondale as power be a worthwhile improvement over useing the shearne as integrated?

I was going for LC but have found a few dodgy reviews

How much would the Shearne fetch used?A Naim 32/42/62 with a power supply based around the APX modules, would be ideal for the NCC200 based amps.

Infinite naim knowledge.......where the hell did that come from?
I havn't got a clue what a non Naim pre amp will work like into the Avondale power amp.
    Why don't you ask Avondale.
I did ask what your current amp would fetch, thinking that you may be able to buy a used Naim pre and use this instead of your current amp.
Naim 32/42/62's can be bought on ebay for around £100..+ say another £200 or so for an APX based supply.

Penance - you are a former sparkie right?

If so, why not go the DIY route (SS or tube) ?

yup, not so hot on electronic design tho, hence the pre-built units.
    Ill take a look tho.

    :)

Ive stumbled on a Crimson 620 power amp for £175
BottleNeck i seem to remember you have some experiance of these?
    or Creek A43 at 275?
at that price, if its a good punt it may keep me happy whilst i save for better
