Has anyone heard the ayre phono stage? Its a zero feedback discrete fet design apaprently and has both unbalanced inputs and outputs so sounds intriguing!

    Ayre

    Hi Nick,
I have the Ayre K1-xe pre with built-in phono boards and it easily outclassed both the 'Groove' and WNA phono stages I had previously. Charles Hansen says the P5-xe is better than the built-in boards, I don't know because I haven't compared. But this way you have less boxes!

    White Noise Audio.

Don't mine bringing it over at all. Love to hear your PMC's anyway! It only has a balanced input for the phono stage, Is that a problem for the Brinkmann??

Hmm we will need some adapters then - my phono is unbalanced out. I guess I will need female phono at one end - will I need xlr male plug to attach to the ayre? I have one set of adpaters but might not be the right ones I will need to check after you let me know.

I can compare the pre with my TVC as well.

'will I need xlr male plug to attach to the ayre?'

Yes male plugs would do it!

what TVC do you have??. My friend has the Music First copper TVC pre. The Ayre is set at 100 ohms at the moment which can be changed with supplied resistors. The gain can be changed also. Output is balanced and unbalanced however unbalanced is inverted I think.

Btw where abouts do your family live in Hereford??

    Jonathan.

I have a django with MFA copper core.

My family lives in ledbury - I have no hifi there so I would need to come to you. Unless you are in london (where my hifi is) some time.

I could bring my phono stage with me to you.

I only have female to female phono to xlr. I would need to order up some other adapters.

I am waiting for a few parts to load the stepup I am using and to install some blocking caps. I should be ready in a couple of weeks.

    Hi all,

It will be quite interested to hear how you all get on with the balanced in and out Ayre phono.

I have been contemplating doing some saving to purchase this (for fully balanced use in and out), to replace my Sonic Frontiers SF1 valve phono.

You can get a pack of two male and two female XLR adapters from a seller on ebay, he sells them for use with Revox cassette decks I think, anyway quite usefull items.

His ID is "Tarius52" usualy has them with a buy it now price of £11 (Home audio / reel to reel / revox).
I am sure he could get them to you quickly if you ask.

If you borrow Jonathan’s phono I'd be interested to have a listen as well. There was quite a difference with Robs and your one.

Maybe we can get rob along as well and kill 2 birds with one stone once I have got the caddocks to finalise the loading and have repalced the servo with blocking caps.
