He can no longer have it all, the dual life, he cannot be Beckham the icon, the media darling, the global celebrity, and Beckham, the dazzling crosser and dead ball taker, the footballer, and most importantly, England captain.
These roles are at odds with each other, and nowhere has it been shown more than Euro 2004.
He looked tired, a shadow of his former self. No doubt the Rebecca Loos affair has taken its toll, and would you scorn a wife like his?
The relentless media pressure must get to him, the photo shoots, the paparazzi, the security meetings working out how to keep his family from getting kidnapped.
One of his split personalities has to go.
He must now choose between his 'brand' and his football, the England captaincy demands so, it demands 100% committment, nothing less.
Make your choice Mr Beckham, you cannot have it all.
The country deserves better. Can you give it to them?

unfortunately because of the huge salaries footballers command they are celebrities by default. i agree he's thrust himself into the media spotlight but this may be a good idea as it's on his terms not the medias - which is nearly always spiteful when they aren't getting co-operation from the celeb. the rebecca loos thing passed me by mainly but it's got to have been a strain.
i do think that he should pay more attention to his training though.
in fact i think all of the england players should play and train together more often. a lot of the give aways seemed to be players thinking there was a team mate where there wasn't. unfortunately what with club footbal being their main bread winner i can't see that happening though.
    cheers

    hmm

He seemed a little afraid to get stuck in at Euro 2004.

Afraid to make a run, be part of an offensive strategy.

A commentator said he was playing like an old pro, conserving energy and doing the odd passing shot.

My personal call would have been to substitute him for an attacking midfield player instead of bringing on an extra defender (neville) in the portugal game.

Like Owen, Sven seemed loathe to substitute either of them. Hats off to the Portugal manager (forgotten his name) for having the balls to substitute Figo, for a fresh pair of attacking legs!

Dyer, Joe Cole, all these attacking players on the bench and the second chuckle brother gets brought on instead? I dont understand Svens defensive strategy of robbing the mid-field.

one thing with Sven says it all...and I like him a lot, BTW.

tho bear in mind, he was an italian manager, and he is trying to make england into an italian side, and it doens't work.

ruddy heskey, ruddy p neville, are there no one better than these? no wonder we are naff!

    As can we all John.

However, in the context of a footballer playing for the national side, we, funding the FA through attending games, buying the gear, watching the ads and subscribing to Sky telly, are entitled to an opinion.

What is your opinion on David Beckham's captaincy? Or don't you have one?

    I completely agree.
A few years ago I was saying the equivalent about Hingis (do you all still remember who she was???? ).
She decided the fashion life and I don't blame her!

Personally I thought and still think that Beckham is the most overrated footballer in the world even considering his positive aspects.

Beckham is a wonderful footballer, just not fit enough,if thats because he does too much media work, then he should cut down, but the issue is fitness, nothing else.As a captain,he has done well, although i would prefer somebody who is more inspirational on the pitch, such as Brian Robson.
