Hi, I've been directed this way from hifiwigwam, where I was asking about the DEQ2496

I wondered what your thoughts were on using it as a DAC in the stock form. I'm sure there would be benefits from using the room correction but assuming I had a perfect room, how good is the DAC section of the beast and what would be comparable to it?

I would probably be looking to mod the DEQ (or find someone that can mod it for me), does anyone know how far it can be pushed and again what is comparable? Also, how much would this cost?

    Thanks for reading......

I think you need to speak to the guy called 'Tenson' on this forum. Do a user search and check his website.

Also, there are pleanty of comments on the unit if you do a search here.

For the money, the 2496 is a bit of a no brainer and certainly stands up in a DAC in it's own right.
I have one which I've compared against my Bel Canto DAC2. IMO The BC is a good deal better, HOWEVER, that's with the 2496 in unmodded form. Tenson has compared his tweaked 2496 to a DAC2 and prefers the 2496, so clearly it has plenty of scope for upgrading.

BTW, that's before you take into account it's ability to deal with room correction, which in my present flat I find absolutely invaluable.

    bang for buck .....its stunning.

I suspect Tenson's mods will move it on a long way ...even just a few simple ones I've done have helped mine. Then throw in the room correction as well.

How's the 2496 compare to the MF X-DAC V3 (unmodded)?

    interesting question ......

I think the unmodded xdacv3 is shut in and nasal ....the src or deq is not but they are bass light unmodded.

When there is full parametric and graphic EQ on the DEQ, you could always tweak the bass!

Had a DEQ. Great DAC for the money even in stock form IMO.
