    Cheers Tony,

Pleased things are going well for you.

Having re-logged on after a prolonged abscence, I'm starting to think about Hifi again.

Listening to a bit of Zep, pizza and some vin rouge. Misses and kids down your way at the in-laws.

So, how do I find my system I hear you ask?

Well, being an ATC Active 50, with an ATC SCM pre amp thingy and a humble NAD silverline cd doofer, all connected by professional (£2/meter) balanced interconnects, you may think that the bass would be a bit light (see earlier ATC postings).

But it's actually not that bad.

There's a new 21" driver ATC sub coming out which apparently plumbs the uncharted depths to 90Hz.

I guess you're not a fan of ATC then.

Have a Bryston myself. Why are you selling? Does it not dig deep enough for you?

Anyway, nice to meet you. Are you related to the Hunts at all?

It's perfect with the sonics, just not quite so aesthetically pleasing to the girlie. I could either remove her eye's or scale down to smaller speakers (with active hidden amps). I had to weigh up the pro's and cons of each option for a few months. I may have made an error. Time will tell.

P.s I need a new name now, so any ideas considered...

Could I make a suggestion therefore?

I have a BP20 going into a couple of ATC Active 10s in my office system. I hide the Bryston because it is pug ugly, but the ATCs punch above their weight unless you go for hardcore dance or thrash metal where 10 ltr is just not enough.

Should listen to some Active 50s though. Loud and tight. Deep when required too. Honest. But very ugly.

On a serious note. I know someone who's just had ATC to make a custom bass enclosure to house a 1kw amp and two 15" drivers. Apparently the techs listened to it in situ, made a few tweeks and took it away again for changes. It will be made in piano black shortly. Apparently it gives out the same low end extension as 2 1/2 ipod nano's, when heard from three metres. Will make a healthy addition to his active 100's. I'll get him to mail me some pictures asap.

    Honestly do not know mate.

If he was daft enough to shell out £6-9,000 on some speakers like the 100's without; a) listening to them, and b) thinking they were the best speakers he'd heard for £6-9000 then he needs to be shot. Or he is very rich and very stupid, which in my experience are mutually exclusive mostly.

So, here I am, not a novice, but not an expert and the bass sounds actually quite good. Erm...have I got it so wrong?

He had PMC IB1's powered by krell 700cx initially. He melted the passive x-overs due to constant high playback, so moved into active ATC's as they run far cooler. The standard 100's were a bit below par apparently, so he swapped them for custom made ATC100's with massively upgraded off board ATC studio amps (huge silver things called P4 or something similar). But he still missed the low end extension of the PMC. Now he thinks this new custom ATC sub will remedy it.

In that case, he is as daft as a brush.

    How big is the room?

I'm sitting in 24' by 12', so 288sq ft and the room is too small for my 50's. Need to upgrade the house rather than the speakers.

He must live somewhere very special to have a speaker problem with the 100's, and spend £9K minimum (if new) to replace some PMC's which burnt themselves, without being sure about it.

    ??????

    John

(edited for being a ****wit and using " for ft instead of ')

He uses the speakers to fill the whole downstairs with sound, not just the lounge. I don't think cost comes into it too much.

Seems to me you have John.

ATc's can do bass, no question.Where they fail sadly is in reproducing the "stunt" varient of this frequency range. For that you will need to look at the specialist manufacturers such as PMC who seem to concentrate on this aspect to the detriment of all else.

    I wouldn't go that far :)

I would simply say that a good proportion of ATC owners I've spoken to use a subwoofer in addition. On the other hand I've not heard of any PMC owners who use a subwoofer as they cover the full audiable range.

I think ATC is for classical music fans, whilst PMC is slightly more suited towards rock / pop etc. Horses for courses, as they say.

A fable is a very short story which is meant to illustrate a point or teach us a lesson. When will you learn?

Do we have to rehearse this argument again? It gets very boring for everyone else.
