Best cheap (secondhand) amplifier + speaker combo?

Hi all, I moved out of my parents house 6 months ago, and I had to sell my hifi and buy computer speakers because I didn't have room for a full setup where I am now.

However, I am moving out of here, and will very likely be likely to buy a cheap hifi again, but thats the point, I don't want to spend very much at all, and I need a pair of speakers and an amp for maybe £250 for both maximum. I would not use it enough to justify having a really expensive system anyway, and i'm not exactly loaded! ;) I also don't have the cash to buy it now, it would likely be nearer xmas...

Main criteria is that its fun to listen to, and I mainly listen to trance / ambient / pop.

They should be suitable for use close to a wall too.

Any suggestions?

why not buy a sonic T amp and a cheap pair of speakers off e-bay?

Thats what I am doing at the moment. I am building a PC system. Sonic T's on ebay are going for about 23 quid including p&p. There is a bloke on there importing them from the states.

I just missed out on some Tannoy 607's, but they are on pretty regularly for £25-£40.

For me, I want a smaller pair of standmounts, and am bidding on a little pair of missions...
 
just remember you need at least 89db.......or run a pair of T-amps like me with a decent power supply and a few good quality bits and boxes.
 
The Cambridge Audio A5 is good value at £120 from Richer Sounds. This is what I have on my 'pooter. It's driving a second hand pair of KEF Q15 which work fine against the wall and sound good close up due to their Uni-Q coincident drivers.

The Kytes also sound very nice with a Quad 33/303 combo, or you could try some Mordaunt Short MS20i's or 25's if you fancy floor standers. Other cheap amps, the Nad 3020i, or the Kenwood 3020se are good, much better than a Cambridge

Agreed Lordsummit,Kytes along with Royds, great bang for buck on a budget.
 
Mordaunt Short MS10i or 20i Pearl and Rotel RA930BX. Or Rotel RA01 and Mission M51s or some Elas or a Cambridge A500- you get the idea ;)
 
If you like warm amps then take a look for an alchemist, these are usually v. cheap!

I had pretty good results with the MS 10i and 25i pearls as well.

If you like really small speakers, the JBL control 1's are pretty good.

I think the Celestion A1's (the smallest ones) are superb if you can find some. I think that's the right name!

I agree with Darryl, actives are by far the best bang for your buck at around £250. I would go for the Alesis Monitor One Active Mk2- very, very good for only £220 brand new or even cheaper off ebay used, they pop up quite a bit. You just need a source with level control. I'd put a pot in a box for level control and use a second hand CD player, maybe something like an entry level Marantz?

They're the A compacts. Deserve to be on the end of a really high end amp- anything else doesnt' do them justice and makes them sound really lean IME. Lets be sensible though- not gonna find a pair of them with pristine tweeters for sub £200 are ya ;)


Paul- can't help but think most suggestions wouldn't really better the Aego2s mate.
