I was watching one of those story of... programmes on VH1 last night about Guns N Roses in which someone reckoned Axl Rose was rocks ultimate front man. I must say I think they had a good case, he was pretty amazing back in the day when they were big.

So..... who is rocks ultimate front man?

Theres a poll attached although not being a big rock man I couldn't think of that many..

Edit: No Poll! Got thinking and realised there were too many options!

If it's rock, there can be only one...although no longer with us of course:

    Bon Scott :)

    Mercury or Plant I'd say.

I would argue that Page was the frontman of Zeppelin, depends how you define it i suppose.I assume this thread is about the lead vocalist?

    Phil Mogg
    Ian Gillan
    Bon Scott

Freddie Mercury has got to be up there ( literally ) with the best. However my vote for a current rock front man is Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson. I've loved the band forever and seen them live many times stretching back over 20 years.

I personally think Jim Morrison defined what everyone's definition of a "rock star front man" later became. Can't say I ever saw him though.......being only 10 when he died.

    Got to be Freddie Mercury.

I've been very, very impressed by Justin Hawkins of the Darkness recently as well.

Axl Rose or Freddie Mercury - wasn't overly keen on much of Queen's music, but that guy had something special. When Freddie was on the stage he owned the croud.

    Ditto.

Although, Freddie Mercury wins as the ultimate showman.

My old guitar teacher was in a band with ginger from the wildhearts. Les played lead, ginger rhythm.

I really like the wildhearts. My favourite bit of music by them is the ''fishing for luckies'' EP. Its got a really cool CD cover too, where if you move the case to one side a hologram type fish appears on the front cover. Cooool!. If you havent heard them, I guess they are a bit like Green Day.

I cant see how anyone could top Freddie Mercury for a front man.

    Except maybe Jimmy Hendrix.

Imagine a Hendrix/Queen double bill. flcokin whatsists!

Mmmm... an interesting one. I guess as the thread is dealing with 'front men' it is only appropriate to consider live performances and not simply vocal skills - there have been plenty of great singers with the stage presence of a tumble dryer.

On the rock side of things it is difficult to disagree with the many votes for Bruce Dickinson, although I guess Alice Cooper would match him for showmanship.

A slightly more leftfield suggestion would be Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson with the manic eyes, flailing arms, one legged antics which have epitomised the Tull live for a quarter of a century.

On a smaller scale, anyone who has been fortunate enough to see the band Ezio would appreciate and agree that Ezio Lunedei is one hell of a frontman and worth catching if ever in a town near you.
