    Paul,

I don't think this forum is any place for discrimination on grounds of sexual preference, although I believe its psychologically healthier to find a partner outside of one's immediate family.

On my Chesky "test" CD the PRAT track is one those large swing american orquestras playing with lots of brass and rythm...

Yeah, it's a great track, and it does need a system with a certain amount of zest to pull it off properly.

I'm no expert, but I get the impression the Naimies and Mana junkies (the world's self-professed PRaT addicts) are mostly middle aged guys who are really into their fondly remembered 70s rock 'n roll, and use that sort of music as their benchmark for PRaT. Though if the Naim Records Hifi Choice sampler disc is any indication they luuuuurve their Spanish guitar...

The thing about dance/electronic music is that as Dom said, that sort of music, with its cleanly synthesized basslines and beats, will sound good and tight on most systems IMO. To really test a system's PRaT you need something that's a little "dirtier" - acoustic jazz/swing, good ol' fashioned rock 'n roll, or lively Spanish guitar for instance...

I'd suggest some righteous bebop, or Led Zep at their bluesy, ballsy best.

And would you all stop being beastly to each other. It's beginning to upset me.

At a guess based on their Tito & the tarantelas tracks (sp??) on From Dusk 'Til Dawn, Los Lobos should be ace in this regard - as should Spanish Caravan by the Doors. And anything off the Desperado soundtrack :)

Now there's a man with taste.

Just about anything musical exhibits some kind of rhythm (apart from most of my record collection, of course), so just about anything would do.

    Good test for PRaT ?

Well it certainly isn't straight 4/4 pop/rock/dance music that's for sure. Try Salsa, Jazz and other music with complicated rythms .. if it leaves you feeling flat and you can't follow any of the syncopation then the system has crap PRaT.

oh.. and any system that makes a particular style of music groove quicker than it should doesn't do timing well. If a peice feels hurried/edgy it is definitey not right.

I know someone who'd obviously never listened to anything but music with 4/4 beats. When we played him some music with syncopation in it (some jazz/rock fusion stuff) he commented that he thought the musicians were playing out of time, obviously becuase he was not use to the idea of hearing things played in-between the beat as opposed to being rigidly always on the strong beat(s).

Some people also talk about the articulation and tunefulness of bass lines when they talk about groove or PRaT.

I know I keep on saying this to Dom, but a bandwidth limited (or cheap) system is bound to groove better, because decent bass which is both wide bandwidth and well behaved are very difficult and expensive to attain in hi-fi. Unless you have an unlimited budget, you usually end up choosing groove over ultimate extension/power.

HenryT - regards attaining good, controlled, bass extension and dynamic grip, are there obvious routes to take, in your view, which might be more cost effective than others?

Or possibly the system didn't actually have 'good PRaT'...
