I don't know how many of y'all are as poncey as me, but I enjoy good food and wine...
I also bimble about the country a bit and am interested in good restaurants or places to eat.
    Waddya recommend?

If anyone dares to go near South Shropshire or N. Herferdshire I'd recommend highly:
Jolly Frog - Leintwardine (French inspired cooking, best dish chorizo and squid £15-30 per head..)
The Stag - Titley (Michelin starred pub, absolutely gorgeous food, best place locally for the occasional blow out - £40-50 per head)
Hibiscus - Ludlow (2 Michelin stars, amazing food combinations such as olive toffee - £50-60)

I'd gladly give you a few addresses but just getting there would cost you the equivalent of 10 great meals taken locally. :)

Anyone near Manchester should go to the Waggon near Birtle. Fantastic

Circa in Lewes, East sussex is well above average and they have now opened a small seafodd restaurant round the corner. Vv nice. £50 to £60 ph with wine.

La Fourchette in Hove is really quite good and they do a really good lunch offer. £25 - £30 ph

Also try The Saint, St James's street Brighton for traditional French cooking. They do a really passable Cassoulet and the confit duck legs are excellent. Cracking wine menu too. £40 - £50 ph with wine

    Cheers,
    Fat Bloke. :D

    Very nice...
And any London chaps, if y'all like proper Indian cookery try the veggie South Indian delights of Sabras on Willesden High Road. The deluxe sev puri is like angels p*ssing in your mouth :D
And it's allegedly Ken Livingstone's favourite, though I did see him in Vijays at the Cricklewood end of Willesden Lane - also excellent South Indian, but this time with meat..
And for very cheap south Indian veggie stuff, try Saravanas just round the corner in Duddon Hill Road...

    So what did you have?

I really must get round to going. If it's not a rude question, what sort of money was involved?

    Cheers,

    Chaps

Because of my age and former occupation I have probably eaten in more restaurants than the rest of you put together. I do not say that as a boast but more as a matter of fact.

I agree Gordon Ramsey is good and the service is meticulous.

However the best Restaurant is Rules in Maiden Lane just off the Strand. They have their own herd of cows in Scotland and the food is fantastic. Their desserts are something to die for.

Also at Christmas, their pudding is the best I have ever tasted.

Also they have private rooms upstairs should you wish to dine discreetly.

It tends to be frequented by Consultants and MPs but then again, nowhere is perfect.

    Regards

    Mick

i ate at rules a few months ago - it was ok but not outstanding although that could have been more my choice of meal. more work related stuff - i quite enjoyed the criterion. the service is a little less puffed than rules.

my current favourite place to eat is little fast food place around the corner from my office. i love it for a few reasons. it looks a bit scussy from the o/s so none of my colleagues eat there, the food is cheaper than chips , the owner and here family are very friendly and the nang nang is lovely,

I am finding it increasingly difficult to find a restaurant locally (St Albans) which serves good food and provides good service. I often try new places which are usuually let down by the service. The other complaint is very few restaurants in my experience are able to maintain the quality of food. Clearly there are good restaurants if I want to venture further afield but I prefer to eat locally.

I ate at Rules once - found it to be slightly better than The Ivy, but with a lower celebrity count. Nice choccie pud at the Ivy though..
Neither were a patch on what the Merchant House in Ludlow was, or on what The 3 Chimneys on Skye is!

Must also recommend Beddgelert Antiques, which is, funnily enough, in Beddgelert in North Wales. Not sure if it's still run by the Canadian guy and his Mrs, but if it is then go - the best wild boar.. And more excitingly, he was into rock - you could order a bottle of wine to go with their sublime bread and butter pud (the best I've had, including Gary Rhodes), and ask for "If You Want Blood" by AC/DC on the (quiet) stereo. He might concur, or say " I think you might find, sir, that Led Zep 2 would go better with that". And he was right!

Sounds great. What is the address?

BTW if any of you travel on business and find yourself in Milano (don't go on holiday for more than a day) you must visit Peck. It is a three story deli with a great restaurant.. foodie heaven and very dangerous for the old Barclaycard.

    Peck web Site

Beddgelert Antiques is in Beddgelert - can't miss it as it's only a small village!
    HERE'S their website..
They do b&b as well, there's 4 pubs in the village and a great campsite (Cae Du, on the Gwynant side)
There's even a steam railway, for those who can't be bothered working off their meal with a walk up Moel Hebog..

Chez Jamin - back in the day and and all that.
The fishermans' restaurant on the quay at Numazu - The best sushi and miso crab soup in the world. The Kirin Lager also tastes better, inexplicably.
Chez Giselle, somewhere deep in the Gironde - Maman, je sais cuisiner and all that.
La Tour d'Argent - for the view, the ambiance and the postcard :D (I still have mine)

The Dolls House in St Andrews, Scotland is a favorite of the wife and mine, especially for weekday lunch.
Again in St Andrews, Nahm Jim is a small Thai place. It is tucked away half way down a small back alley, with just a small sandwich board marking its presence to casual observers on the main street. I've never had a bad meal there, the prices are very reasonable and the staff very friendly.

expect about 250 for two... not cheap, but it was an experience.

i'd also say that rick stein's cafe in padstow is fab, better value than either the restaurant or bistro.
