    LCD, what have you started?

I'll get the ball rolling with Tannoy Westminsters, with 99db sensitivity ideally suited for tubes.

BMW M5 cash? I thought these big boys were only £15k new. S/H they lose their value fast due to their size/looks.

The SP100 is not a 'large' speaker, IMO, and the bass driver is considerably smaller than 12", whatever it may say in the specs. Bextrene cones, too.

    Nice veneer finish, furniture friendly.

    Hi Data,

    How about some of these.

They do them with 10", 12" or 15" drivers with high sensitivity and an easy impedance curve. Worth a look.

Those TANNOY monitors look nice. How much do they cost?

Do you really want to buy new speakers?
What do you expect from them?
In what size room must they fit into?
    Why 12 / 15" drivers?

    Hi Chris,

I'm not fully sure. I think they were over the £1000 mark. But there is a Mk II version of the DMT 15. These retail at £1400. These have a sensitivity of 101 db/w/m. The speaker weighs about 45 KGs.

So for people who like the looks, they might make ideal partners for a Sugden a21a or any number of class A valve designs. Interesting :)

    Re: Re: big speakers

Big drivers like that, if well-designed, do 'scale and slam' effortlessly.

Size DOES matter, Titian. [The wife/gf/SO is just trying to be kind to you for the sake of a quiet life if she says otherwise.]

    :)

You obviously know they are monitors, so they could be a bit ruthless and the grey surface was designed for a hard life in the studios, not sure it has the WAF.

They appear to be quite cheap compared to their HiFi equivalents.

Just click on UK and search for Tannoy DMT. Sorry I can't post the whole link.

Grrrrr! The whole point of hi-fi is to get as close as possible to the recorded sound.

Monitors are only 'ruthless' if your front end or amps are a bit iffy, or if the recording is a bit dodgy (this is rare, and there's nothing anyone can do about it).

Anyone who doesn't like monitors either has a shite system, or doesn't wish to know what's on the record. Sorry guys, but this is hi-fi. It's what it's all about!

Hey, I didn't say it was a bad thing. For years I've used Tannoy SRM10B monitors as my main speakers. I like accuracy. My point is that some (most?) might not.

    bub has 12" atc's.

I have to say, having heard both 9" atc and 12" volt( wilmslow prestige) I have doubts, they are undeniably attractive in their own way, but I wastn' blown away by the bass...maybe I was expecting too much.

This is what makes me think you need at least a 15 incher.

My best experiences have been with big cones, and high sensitivities, YMMV, but SETs high sensitivities and big cones, paper for me, seem to be my ideal combo, as what i seek is directness and a kind of tangible presence and stage.

I like a bit of colour, so will have to disagree with bub again:) thing is, bub, there are MANY monitors, all different, (indeed, accuracy as a word has different connotations to different peope.....I believe it is used with reference to speakers as an objective reference to a ruler flat frequency response, however that is why in that case accuracy cannot be the same, as in my xp, simple generalisations of sound based upon the measured bits cannot be predicted, and I have found bears little relation in practice) with different presentations, so whilst someone may not like 1 monitor and slag of the breed, of course that is not representative, I am doing that with mosfets ATM BTW, rejecting the breed based upon 1 or two types, indeed, the very term monitor itself is misused and cheapened now, and I don't think you can get the recorded sound as it was in any case. beware of over generalising. a monitor is not a monitor

I believe the point of hifi is to make your listening how you enjoy it. not recreate the studio. simply enjoy your music, and for me, you can't beat valves and paper cones(or electrostatics). coloured, yes, but I do like life colourful and vivid:D YMMv

What about big old 3 way JBLs? I don't know model numbers but the ones I've heard in studios certainly do the 'effortless' thing nicely.
