    Not sure what's around in terms of sound quality or representative recordings.

    jeff, Ive just been skiving and looking at the 1.99 amazon album thread on pink fish.

    there was a billie holiday compilation for 1.99. click the link that somebody posted, and trawl through!

    The only CD in my collection by Billie Holliday is Lady in Satin,the recording quality is quite good and I reckon it is fairly representative of her career.

    The only one I've got is a best of. Quality varies pretty much from song to song. However, when it's a "bad" recording, it adds character I guess...... or something like that.

    Same here, two disc set. Many sound like they just recorded the worst vinyl copy they could find straight to CD.

    That's my worry. Also with the amount of recordings available (whilst I gather she did work rather hard) I suspect any old recording was just bunged out to squeeze every last drop out of her legacy.

    She was at her prime in the 30s and 40s, with Benny Goodman, Lester Young, Artie Shaw, et al. By the 50s her voice was pretty bolloxed, and the performances less consistent. Most of the compilations are of stuff from the 50s, however. Stick to the 30s and 40s material, it's some of the most important in the history of sung pop music. If you find yourself worrying about the recording quality, punch yourself in the head for missing the point.

    I have this on 180g or 200g Verve vinyl [reissue]. Cost me a packet about 10 years ago at a hi-fi show. Sounds absolutely breathtaking, mind. It's quite short tho, there's a reissued CD on Amazon with plenty more tracks on it so that might be the option to go for, and get the vinyl later if you really like it.

    Just flicking thru the reviews on Amazon - a guy says he's got 35 BH LPs and this is no2 on his list, so would have thought it'd be an interesting and quality place to start.
