    Hi.

I'm completely useless at this sort of thing, so I thought I'd throw it open to the floor and see if someone to spark some insiration to help me sort this out.

In a couple of weeks it'll be my Mrs 30th birthday and yep I've probably left it a bit late to organise anything, but I need some ideas as to what to do for her day.

Things like Alton Towers are not suitable due to her disability, but was thinking along the ideas of days out or a weekend thing or even just a party idea, assuming I can book somewhere.

    Any ideas gratefully received.

Why not take her to something like the Opera ?
They cater for disabilities and tickets can be picked up pretty cheaply if you look out for any deals. I think it would be a hell of an aural experience  .

Weekend in Paris, Barcelona, somewhere else.

    Not terribly original, but nice.

That's a real shame actually mate, because I'd love to spend a weekend away at Alton Towers. Fond memories of when I went on a weekend away with some work mates back in 1996 when we did Alton Towers on the Saturday and Blackpool on the Sunday - the Pepsi-Max Big One, yeah :MILD: .

Opera, maybe not to your tastes ;) but how about an evening at a symphony concert at the Great Hall (Exeter Uni) - assuming we can find a concert for the right date.

A meal out at that Spanish restaurant in South Street - Cohiba - I think they have a reasonable veggie selection from what I remeber from the last time I was there.

I guess it all depends on who is going..?? - I suspect it maybe a big family affair..??
then you could organise some kind of marque (is that how you spell it?)...

my girlfriend's friend is turning 30 next month and she is having a great big BBQ by Bala lake (wales) and we'll be camping too...that wil be great, providing the weather doesn't turn sour...

otherwise if there are just the two of you, then you'll know bext what she wants, but I'd whisk her away for a long weekend to some lovely tranquill setting.

Thanks guys I knew it was a good idea posting something here, I have a few great ideas now.

Harry, nice one, I think she'd really like this, I forgot she likes to go to classical concerts and the season is starting soon isn't it, do you have a list of dates, or know where I can find them, the spanish meal is right up her street though we have been before, guess she wouldn't mind going again as she enjoyed it, nice one thanks. As for a group thing, I think a timepeice night should take care of that, don't know what her family have planned (if anything) as they've not bothered to tell me.

As for Altern Towers, well put it this way the last time Ali went on a Roller Coaster she ended up in hospital a week later with a blocked shunt, so that sort of thing had to be ruled out.

As for MO and Mr Cat, my name isn't Homer Simpson! hehe ;)

    Timepiece sounds good :)

That's a major league bummer about Alton Towers - I've never been there! Did you guys hear about the fire at Blackpool Pleasure Beach recently? Apparently the Big One was very near the seat of the fire, but it only received smoke damage. That is one mad rollercoaster - shame those damn shunts are soooooo pinnickity as Ali'd get a major rush out of that one!

Ya shunts are a right royal pain in the butt, I mean it stops her using planes without a medical checkup & certificate from the quack, little things like air pressure can upset it, going on holiday costs a fortuine just in medical insureance, the incedent I was talking about was a trip to Disney Land Paris in 1997, can't remember the coaster we went on, but it was one that looped, which I didn't realise until it was too late.

Anyway checked out the two sites that BL21DE3 kindly posted up, there isn't anything around her birthdate, so I'll have a look at the Arts centre to see if there is anything,.

Again thanks for all your input, which reminds me, better book that resturant.

On the Saturday night the only thing I can find at the Arts Centre is.

    THE HAMSTERS
    Sat 18 / doors 8.30pm / £10 (£8)
Performing almost 3,500 concerts in 17 years, with a mailing list exceeding 20,000 and a website which receives over 1,000 visitors a day, the guitar, bass and drums trio The Hamsters have long been established as our premier blues-rock attraction. Although primarily playing their own brand of material, they are also widely regarded as the UK's leading interpreters of the music of Jimi Hendrix and ZZ Top. Tonight they'll be showcasing material from their new studio album, 'Open All Hours' (Terrific - Bob Harris), and concert video, 'To Infirmity, And Beyond!'.
"They're fabulous: one of Britain's very best live bands" - BOB HARRIS, RADIO 2

or on the Friday there is

    SHERMAN ROBERTSON BAND
    With JUNKYARD ANGELS ?WGT
    Fri 17 / 8pm / £12.50 + BF
An evening of gritty bar room Texas blues played by a man whose blistering hard - assed guitar work has been tearing up the floorboards of the international Festival circuit for the last decade. Influenced heavily by Eric Clapton's favourite guitar master Freddie King, the man is now right up there alongside the likes of B.B.King and Buddy Guy. If you haven't already heard of Sherman but like your blues drenched in sweat, a barnstorming night is guaranteed - this is one for you!
    A BSW production.

Are any of them any good / worth seeing???

The Hamsters are a very good band. As it says, they do a lot of Hendrix and ZZ Top covers, but have done a few albums of their own material as well which stands up reasonably well against their covers. Sherman Robertson is meant to be excellent, I'm probably going to go even though I can't afford it because I've heard a lot of good about him and it'd be rude not to check it out. Plus, I'll be able to find out what other bluesy stuff's going to be on in and around Exeter/Topsham over the next few months. Could lend you a Hamsters album or two if you like.

Timepiece does sound like a good idea, that or Arena. If you ring either up and mention about it being Ali's birthday they might even send out some free tickets.
