morning...well, I was driving along the a68 just outside of Rowley (Consett) on saturday evening (it was wet and foggy) and I'd just left a 30mph zone onto a 60mph and as I was going a bend the car aquaplanned and I lost control...I went flying into a dry stone wall and my poor little peugeot is a writeoff...

luckily I was able to walk away with notjing wrong at all...just a bit shocked tho!

the local farmer called the police who were very kind and even gave me a lift home...

I had to buy myself a sh*te fiat uno yesterday like...sigh...

oh man tough luck there. Why a Fiat uno? geez I could cycle faster than those things! Goes to show that the safety cells work well in these cars, since you where able to walk away from this. So what you insurance company have to say? Probably only give you pence for it if they want to know at all.

yeah, the reson I bought the uno was because the guy selling it lives in the same village...as I didn't have any other transport and only 1 day to buy one (well, had to come into work today...) my choices were a bit limited..!

ah yeah, insurance...I was only 3rd party...! sigh...
the insurance are going to send the me form etc tho

oh mate, ya I can see your postion there, not good a, well hope the uno is only a short term thing, maybe you can partx it for something a little better later on (wouldn't be hard). Hope the guy didn't sting you for it. To add salt to the wound, I suupose you had to pay for the car to be towed and scrapped as well?

well, with reagdring to my old car - I rang the RAC for them to get a garage to tow it away to a local garages depot - I assume the insurance will cover the cost of any charges there...I'll check with them later!

wouldn't care, I had just filled it with petrol too!

My wife did a very similar thing to you last Novemeber. She wrote our car off, along with my 9 years of NCD, by skidding and hitting a dry stone wall. In the last 13 years since we've been living in the same village we have probably driven around that same bend Thousands of times, usually dodging eveybody else who crashes there ( usually a minimum of 2 cars per month on a particular 200 yard strtch of road), this time it was our turn. Luckily everybody escaped unhurt, even though every single panel on the car was damaged.

I kinda came out of it OK, (apart from the NCD) as my insurance gave me more for my car than i ( or anybody else i asked) thought it was worth and now have bought her a better car with the proceeds than the one we had.....

I'e owned 4 Fiats now , and although the older models used to dissolve in the rain, the newer models seem to be not tooo bad. They are small, cheap, economical to run little cars, with quite spunky, free revving engines. The Turbo Charged Uno's still have quite a following amongst the car tuning fraternity...

Glad to see that you didn't get any injuries...

yeah, it was surreal like as I was just building up my speed and just hit 60mph - went round then lost control...it happened so fast, yet seemed to be in slow motion...I had no control tho...

the fiat's only a 1 litre tho...thats really sucks...couldn't even get it past 70mph on the dual carriage way this morning..!!

still can't work out the reverse gear tho...it's different to my peugeot - I had to reverse when doing a 3 point turn, but had to get out and push the car...it's so light too!! was like pushing a pram! *grin*

damn seems like the season for accidents. my daughters best friend was involved in an aquaplaning accident last week. a car comming the opposite way aquaplaned and rolled into the car she was in. no one killed but both cars written off - various injuries, the only serious ones though were to my daughters best mate (who was on her way to her 8th birthday party) - 2 cracked vertibrae and internal bruising from the seatbelt. most definately take care - it's not just you that you might kill.
    cheers

I am a trained emergency driver, aquaplaning is actually quite rare nowadays due to tyre technology and suspension and all that.

I have actually been upto 100 on the mway in the wet on not new tyres and still not lost it, but dont' make a habit of it.

were your tyres particularly poor? it may be likely there was oil on the road.

in the summer when it hasn't rained for a bit, and then does, all the oil and gunk goes 'into' the road and the rain brings it suddenly to the surfact, that's when you can get problems

You shouldn't be going faster than 70 anyway - tsk tsk tsk.

Glad you're OK mind you :)

T-Bone - sorry to hear about your mate - that's not good :(

I feel like wearing a mask whilst driving, I'm ashmed that i'll get seen... 8o)
but with 3rd party insurance and the need to have a car by yesterday - this was an easy option...
I put a tenner's worth of petrol in the tank last night - and it was 1/2 full!!

lordy - not just us then - my good lady put her car into a wall on friday morning - she's fine, cars a write off......
down hill, off camber bend, morningafter the first rain we'd had for a while.......
lost it entering the bend, over corrected, hit the wall on the inside of the bend.
Very lucky on 3 counts - 1 no injuries, 2 its the site of regular accidents - had she slid across the bend there was no wall there (due to previous accidents) so she could have ended up rolling 150feet to the bottom of the valley. 3 - car ended up pointing forwards, trapped against the wall cos the wheels were in the drainage ditch, had she spun she'd have ended up in the middle of the road on the exit of a blind bend....
Fully comp but only a £500 escort, shes on the train till we find the cash for a replacement.......

another query here guys....whats the score with scrapyards - would i get much for my old motor then..?

bearing in mind that its a 10 year old peugeot - front end smashed in (damage to engine, but not sure how much), passenger side doors smashed up a bit too...

would they pay to pick up the car too..?

just that it's at a storage place just now, and they want abut 157 notes to move it...and no, the insurance doesn't cover that!

obviously I'm not after making a profit (tho, would be nice!) - I just don't fancy having to pay the 157 quid

just spoke to one place - he's gonna take it free of charge...I explained the score and he said he knows how these guys operate (i.e. charging 150 quid) - but he says that in past experience they'll try to make up some charge as they feel as tho they're losing out in some way...

so, he'll take it tonight / tomorrow morning...providing they let him...

I'll most likely give the garage a ring after work...

ya they'll spout some EU BS about having to recycle every part and that it costs them money to dispose of it, not that they don't make any money from selling parts or the metal, oh no, my heart bleeds for them.

Geez what have I started, I come of the bike and now everyone's having accidents, stay safe out there guys.

That was bad luck Mr C, that pug of yours was in good nick for it age.

I parked my coupe in Darlington last month only to come back and find some tosser had run into the back of it and dissapeared. It looked worse than it was, by the time I'd jumped up and down a bit and then drove home, the whole back bumper had popped out and back into shape, only needed a lick of paint and a back light cluster.

As for scrap yards nowadays, even if the cars a runner they wont pay for em and some charge to take em, greedy bastids.

well, well...just got a letter from my insurance and they've received communication from the NFU (national farmers union)...seems like the farmer did claim for it (hardly surprising really) - I'm a bit surpised on how long its taken tho...!!

I've just gotta fill in the form...sigh...

wonder how much it cost to rebuild part of a stone wall (about 8 foot long and 4 foot high?) ?
