Sounds like someone's on the Atkins Diet or similar (where no fruit or carbs are allowed). Load of bollox IMO but each to their own. There's only one way to lose weight: eat less calories.

Saw the Horizon programme about the Atkins diet recently and it was very interesting. A huge study of it (and other diets) showed that people on Atkins simply eat less calories, even though they're allowed to eat as much as they like, and that's where the weight loss comes from and why Atkins "works". Some recent studies have shown that it's likely that the high protein intake in Atkins is what reduces people's appetites and hence how the diet works. However, it's no miracle cure, it works just like any other diet does: less calories.

    michael,
to be honest i'm not really that bothered how it works. the fact that for me it seems to give me an advantage in that i'm no longer thinking about my next meal while i'm eating this one is good enough.
even on induction which is the most extreme stage of atkins you are allowed 20g of carbs. this is quite a lot if you are careful.
at the end of the day though i'd agree that less calories + more exersise == weightloss however if you can get an advantage from eating or exercising a particular way then i say go for it.
blackberries and most other fruits are not actually 'forbidden' but as they are quite a sweet fruit and they are high in carbs for their weight so it's not really worth having a small handfull and then going without for the rest of the day. the sugar and flour in the crumble (mmmmm) is a definite no no though.
    cheers

Sorry Ju, I was a bit harsh. By "a load of bollox" I was referring to the large amount of hocus-pocus pseudo science explanations that are given about why Atkins works. That it works is not really debatable, it clearly does. I'm actually following a low-carb, high-protein diet myself in an attempt to get rid of my beer belly :D ....and it's working. However, I'm still eating lots of fresh fruit and veg which is a lot healthier in the long term. I think that following Atkins for any prolonged period (more than a year) could have serious health consequences, particularly heart disease.

You might want to check out the South Beach Diet as a healthier alternative to Atkins. I'm just making my diet up as I go along but that's where I got the inspiration from.

Christ - this is turning into the Cosmo forum :D

Well on the positive front its a lot of exercise wandering around fields, climbing in and out of hedges and carrying large bags of fresh fruit home, slaving over a hot stove and digging out ice cream. 1 bowl of crumble is the least you deserve!

i'd agree that there is a huge amount of arse spoken about how and why atkins works but for me it does.
as i said if you're careful you can eat a lot of fresh veg on atkins induction. today i had a large (and i mean large) salad with cabbage, basil, beansprouts and onion with olive oil mayo and lean chicken. that was about 10 -12g of carbs. hadly the popular misconception of an atkins meal is it?
the other things that are hardly ever mentioned but are stressed in the book is excersise and suppliments. i now do a lot of excersise and neck about 7 different pills every morning. seems to work though.

    cheers

Of course it is no miracle. But at the end of the day if this is the method some people find best to lose weight, then whats the problem?

No problem at all, but I think people should be aware of the potentially harmful effects of doing Atkins long term.
