Looks like quite a good site. Another good one for buying Blues stuff is www.redlickrecords.co.uk. Excellent selection and I've always found their service really good.

I always used these guys before they had a website. I have't bought any blues in the last 3 years tho. They used to publish a 100s of pages catalog and quarterly updates. They also have a very good record label

Listen before you buy is a GR8 idea.
There must be so much talent out there waiting to be discovered!

Anything like this for instrumental Jazz?

Just noticed that BBC4 have been running what look like a rather interesting series of music documentaries looking at very aspects of blues music:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour/music/features/blues.shtml

Each programme is well over an hour long, so you ceratinly get your money's worth. I've not see any of them yet, but a bit gutted at having missed so many of the programmes already. Hope they repeat them again.

The one this week is focusing on piano blues, what with the piano being my fave instrument and with a long standing intention to get some more boogie-woogie piano music into my music collection this should make for informative viewing. :)

    Thanks HenryT

The only full time Jazz radio station in Britain seem to be Jazz FM.
In London only for FM broadcasts. But you can get it on DAB or Freeview. 128 kbps only but listenable.
    :)

    Hi Max,

Yeah, I use to listen to Jazz FM (on FM) occassionally when I use to live up London way. IIRC they use to have artists come to do live sets in their studios on a Saturday morning, certainly remember listening to a very good one with Eric Bibb once.

I can get Jazz FM via my Telewest cable TV set-top box, although the set top box is in a different room to the main hi-fi. I think I need to invest in one of those wireless audio/video senders, maybe I should start up a new topic in the hi-fi forum for suggestions, as I would listen to the radio stations off of cable a lot more if I did have this facility in the main listening room (mainly for background music though as the fidelity wouldn't really be good enough for serious listening ;) ).

I saw all of this last week's (2nd half on Fri, 1st half on Sat - or somthing like that!) - which was all about British blues. Interesting getting all the yank balck guys saying that it was the white Brits that opened up the possibilities for them in the US - not sure whether that was just buttering us up though.

Got a grand collection of the great and the good together for a bit of a blues jam (is that damson or black cherry?) session: Van Morrison, Lulu, Jeff Beck, Tom Jones et. al., + a rather good saxophonist I'd not heard of before (Pete King or summut). Also a bit of a solo from Charlie (or was it Chris ;) ) Farlowe (Piggy Malone not in evidence) - thought his guitarrist was excellent. Plus loads of talk from Humph, Clapton, Lonnie D ( ) John Mayall etc. about the interactions between blues, jazz and rock

Only caught a brief snatch of the previous week though (Robert Johnson + ?)

All in all rather a good watch.

BTW I do most of my home radio listening (mostly R3 and R4) through the NTL cable box, routed through the hifi, and it's pretty good (way better than the crap FM reception I got previously) although the stereo balance goes off a bit sometimes (CD Review being particularly awful)

I remember it starting, and looked forward to hearing jazz on't radio..
And what did they put on?
    Elevator music!
Maybe I just didn't listen at the right times, but most stuff I've heard on it is the sort of dinner jazz you get at Pizza on the Park, never anything even remotely original and certainly not challenging.
