That 3.0 twin turbo is a peach.

    Ditto.

Anyway, I celebrated oil hitting $120/barrel by buying one of the older 4litre V8s.

    Hey it's green.
    Ish.
Well the paint, that is. The engine is just delightful.

    I'd love a 740i sport with the 4.4 V8 :)

wouldn't mind the same generation of 540i auto as well, cracking engine.

I think the 335i is a better choice than the V8s these days because you get blistering performance, V8-a-like torque, and 30 mpg.

yes, but that would be missing the point surely ;)

what you end up with instead is an engine which is naturally not as smooth (although is rebalanced to be smooth), has turbo lag, and doesnt sound as nice.

Im slightly biased though, i cant stand turbo's. I also dont entirely understand BMW's choice to go that route, when they showed with the M3 they could make a car go as fast as the 335 in the form of the M3, which uses less fuel at full chat in the process and has no turbo lag.

Me.. i like the smooth, lazy effortless style of the 4.0 V8 thanks ;)

Each to his own, but there is no turbo lag, over 300 torquey things from 1300 RPM, and 0-100 is about 12 seconds. Completely effortless as well. Straight six is naturally better balanced than any V8. BMW say it performs like a 4 litre V8, but is lighter, giving better handling, and more economical.

It's international engine of the year two years running for a reason ;)

Is the 335i a straight six? i thought it was a V6 in order to accomodate the twin turbo's... if its still a straight six then i take back my smooth comments.

I still prefer the V8 ;) a supercharged one even moreso

Hey, prefer whatever you like, mr shrink!

    335i is a total blast though ;)

Those "international engine of the year" people prefer the 335i!

ach but they all wanna save the whales and do so efficiently :)

have never liked turbo charged cars, and as the old saying goes... theres no replacement, for displacement

I think you've nailed the reason why this engine has won these awards. I don't like the traditional peaky power delivery of older turbo installations either, but if you were to drive the 335i, you would never guess it is turbocharged. As BMW say, it behaves like a big V8, but with better economy and handling characteristics. When tested on the Nurburgring, the 335i lapped faster than the then-current incarnation M5 with its big V8.

But hey, if you prefer to travel slower & use more petrol, that's up to you ;)

I had that three litre lump in my last car (although without the turbo). Most boring car I ever had.

Well, it didn't win any awards. You should try the twin turbo version.

no just a personal preference, ive driven plenty turbo charged cars that people thought were very well executed and clever and well done, still no substitute for a proper large engine as far as I'm concerned.

Im sure its an excellent engine indeed, it's just a bit false. I don't care how good they say it is... there will come a point, when by accident you have that car in the wrong gear at the wrong speed, and there's just simply not as much power as you would have were it a larger engine. You cannot break the laws of physics, merely compensate for them as best as possible.
