To me there seems to be so many speakers around at the mo which seem to do most things right/safely but lack a certain something?

Lots of these designs simply bore me!

Anyone else got an opinion about this?

    yes,

ive bought wharfedale 8.1's + demo'ed quad 12l's both of which have been universally praised for sounding neutral but to me they sound VERY pipe n' slippers......Whats so good about boring sounding speakers ?????? the treble sounds rolled off and the bass is sooooo slow

If a neutral speaker results in boring sound with rolled off treble, you've got crap electronics.

If your electronics need spicing up with less than neutral loudspeakers, you have crap electronics.

If on the other hand you prefer to listen to distortion, then neutral speakers coupled to competent electronics might disappoint.

Good points but a more accurate word might be instaed of neutral how about sterile.

Says it all really. Depends whether you want to view the world through clear glass or stained glass.

(or even rose-tinted glass if you prefer)

I believe you can can the balance right.
Ofcourse most of us want a speaker that is uncoloured and as neutral as possible but I get the feeling that quite a few loudspeakers are playing down musicality in order to pursue this end.
Musicality is what will keep you listening not how neutral a speaker sounds.
when the speaker loses it's albility to communicate musicly and neutrality ends up as a sterile waste land!

If the musicality is missing, either the music was poor in the first place or your speakers are not neutral.By definition, a neutral loudspeaker neither adds nor removes anything to the music.

    Alternatively your electronics are crap.
