Currently have a Karajan version of Brahms Requiem, on EMI Classics (5628112)

The sound on it is horrible.
It comes across like a very bad recording, so much so that my wife & I can't take more than about 5-10 minutes without cringing & wanting to turn it off!

Can anyone recommend a better version.

    Hi there Paul, and welcome,
I have the John Eliot Gardiner version on Philips Digital Classics, the sound quality is OK, it was recorded in 1991 with period instruments.

There was a discussion about it in this thread halfway down the second page.

Others will be along shortly :D

The Klemperer EMI recording is the classic one, and it surely deserves its status. Great analogue recording.

A decent modern CD recording would be prefered.

Another vote for John Eliot Gardiner and Co. on Philips. others are dull and boring by comparison.

There was a good one by Andre Previn and the LSO, with Margaret Price and Samuel Ramey from late 1980's, not sure if it was on Teldec or Telarc, or if its still available.

Gardiner is really the only choice of the ones I've heard - all the others (the EMI and DG Karajans, the recent LSO Live, the Klemperer, etc.) had the choir singing a quarter-tone flat all the way through in that really irritating way that choirs do far too often.

    OK...

So I got the Gardiner version.
Much, much better than the Karajan version.
