I'm from the little town where the dead swan was found, and my folks still live there. Apparently tales of road blocks and 'quarantines' are grossly exaggerated, but of course this is a bit of a concern as Anstruther is 7 miles from the Isle of May, which homes a quarter of a million birds, many of whom are migratory. In other words, it's a perfect breeding ground for the flu virus to take hold, and spread rapidly. As it's to all intents and purposes an unpopulated island with a huge density of seabirds, it's going to be very difficult to do anything about it. So, it's serious ****.

Britain is a collection of islands with a lot of coast and a lot of migratory birds. It would have been extraordinary that no migratory bird was found to have the disease. And given that Britain also has a high density breeding grounds, so it has opportunity to take hold among wild flock.

I dont see why it is serious ****, these sort of things happen, it's nature.
Of course, media hype does help the panic situation.

I agree with Penance; the world's overpopulated enough - tagging a few million with bird flu makes sense in the grand scheme of things. Sorry to be blunt, but if it's going to happen it will, so panicking won't do ****.

That should extend to tagging a billion people too. A 15% reduction in world population wouldn't half help humanity focus on the important issue staying alive and being thankful for what we have.

Why is every body under the misconception that even if it mutates it will be any more dangerous than it is already ? If every virus that existed became more virulent with every mutation the human race would have died out long ago.

I think certain people rather like keeping the majority of the population scared witless with miss information and ludicrous comments from government scientists. Remember the forecasts about AIDS and CJD.

It may well mutate into a virus that changes every body's perception of what makes good music, when I become infected from snogging a Spoonbill I may well develop a love of the bagpipes and Austrian folk music !

From what I've read about CJD the 'scare' is still very much on track, and AIDS is doing everything that was said it would in Africa.
