Caught this lot on Later last night and thought they were all right (that's about as enthusiastic as I get about pop music nowadays).

Can anyone tell me anything about them? Do they have albums, are they any cop?

They had trees on stage with them, which was nice.

Thanks Sgt. I didn't think of the obvious...

Might have to get their album. Is this the sort of thing youngsters are into? If it is, there may be some hope for them after all.

Sorry, I've no time for this pop music you talk of! Cheap whisky and global change is the agender of the day!

    Big up yaself!

In that case Sgt you must leave this thread at once. :)

And so should I, for that matter...

MO, keep up the good work. Capitalism's days are surely numbered.

    Age shall not whither them…

I like the look and sound of British Sea Power. Soundwise, I thought they came across a collision between the House of Love, Echo and the Bunnymen, and the Pixies, which is no bad thing. And the bent for trees, wildlife, puttees and other military props is rather endearing. They hark back to a time when indie bands were allowed to have lofty (nay, even pretenious) ideas and pursue them with admirably straight-faced conviction. Rather that than the insipid, solipsistic dronings of Coldplay, Starsailor, etc, etc, ad nauseum.

They certainly brought a smile to this grumpy old man's face.

You can't beat a bit of surrealism in pop music.

Yes, I liked the cut of their jib. I'll be buying the album today.

Well, it's playing at the moment. It's called The Decline of British Sea Power. The vocalist is very mannered, but in a way I like, although there are a few too many Bowie-isms. Pretty good, on the whole.

Sideshowbob, I bought it a few weeks ago, I didn't even realise the 'Bowie-isms' before you mentioned it. Now I can't help listening to it without Bowie in my head - Cheers ;)

Other influences seem to be The Pixies/Frank Black (as mentioned before) and James. The production seems to be very 'lo-fi' which also gives it that 'older than it is' feel. I like it, but it didn't have me hooked until the 3rd or 4th play, much to Mrs Wingnuts annoyance.

Pah! That's the problem with music today (if you can call it that), no originality! I'll continue to listen to the *originals* and leave you damn oldies to this plastic pop!

This whole thing of having trees on stage with them, sure this isn't just a gimmick so people will remember them apart from any other indie band they might catch on Later...? They might have heard about ZZ Top doing it back in the 70's, figured no-one today would know and they could pass it off as an original idea and gain credibility/novelty value with the teenagers who will probably make up a good 80% of their album sales figures?

I've not heard the music so can't comment on that. Might get MVC to stick it on a listening post next time I'm in town...

I've got this album but can't get into it at all. I'll give it another go .... eventually.
