    Chaps,

Does anyone know anything about this scheme? I've just been online and tried to sign up for it at a very reasonable £6.99 per month. I don't really do enough surfing to justify broadband prices but I do enough to justify this.

I went through the process and it starting waffling on about an additional "Surf time Package" - when (even though I wasn't impressed) I went to go and purchase one I was expecting a one off payment, but the impression I get is that it's an additional £7.00 a month  So WTF is the £6.99 for, the ISP subscription?

If so that comes to £13.99 per month so all of a sudden the price has doubled and it's erring on broadband territory, if I understand it right that's a total f**king rip off and should be sorted by trading standards. They can't advertise something at £6.99 then half way through sign up double the price....

    Anyone know any different?

at a guess you have inadvertently signed up for an ISP for the additional cost,so its a rip off to pay for anything for an ISP nowadays. The £7 is just their charge, which i think is still a joke when you can get Broadband for not much more

I think the best deals are the limited access Broadband deals,at £15 p/m I think you get a couple of hours a day,so much better than dial up

thats a better deal than £7 for dial up,with BB you would cut your surfing time down by half due to the speed, and of course increase the enjoyment,

    Total cost of ownership

    RDD,
you might like to browse this link to the TOC page of the ADSL Guide it may give you a few ideas, they also have a string of fora where punters sometimes express rather heated opinions and feelings about various ISPS and packages.

Don't go for broadband as you WILL spend more time on line, think 56k is a joke better to go for cheapest BB package (even 150k) as for eg with HFC you can open up webpage, see what posts, are new and possibly even write a short reply, all before 56k has dialed up and loaded homepage, really is like going from candles to electric light.

    VFM, YMMV, ect

Just to get an idea of BB cost and service levels in the OECD have a look at this PDF , it is a bit bigish so a BB connection might help . . . .

Thanks for the info chaps, good job I didn't sign up, check this out from ADSL (thanks for the link Auric)

"If I purchase SurfTime from Scotnet, why do I need to also purchase a SurfTime service from BT?

BT SurfTime is a service provided by BT that enables 'cheaper', fixed cost access to the Internet via one of the participating Internet service Providers (ISP) - such as Scotnet.

You must register for this service with BT SurfTime. BT will charge you for the SurfTime facility. You will also be charged by Scotnet for the Internet Service Provision"

Thieving bar stewards :inferno: So BT want £7 for the Surf Time package, you THEN have to pay another £6.99 or in some cases as much as £10 for an ISP. In that case this is a total rip off, I can get "always on" 150kbps for £1 more a month!!

Good job I stopped short of signing up, they can shove that up their asses, amazing they can get away with advertising it as they do.

Thanks again chaps, hope this has helped clarify for anyone else thinking of going for this.

I'd reccomend you go for always on 150k, you won't be dissapointed, I have 1meg and only need the extra for sending big files downloading and streaming video, otherwise 150k is fast enough for surfin' most sites unless they have big piccies.

I have tiscali now. It works fine, NOW:mad:

It dind't to begin with, I lost crucial ebay auctions with it at first....grrr. however a threat to cancel, and they sorted.

Its the 150k and is fast enough. Could always use more. But its fine. £15.99 p.m unlimited.

freeserve are good, too, avoid plusnet, bad service and struggled to get refunded, lots of calls, a manager wouldn't even speak to me.
Dunno what school of customer care he went to. shite. never ever.

WOW .. are BT still doing this? I would have thought by now that BT/ISP would have to of reduced their prices by now. Or at least BT allowed you to use any ISP number.

You're right, it's a combined BT + ISP price. Problem is you can't nominate your own ISP access number (eg a free one) you have to go with one of their nominated ISPs. Which obviously charge for the privilege.
