Looking at the poll, a few of you have AV setups so I need some advice from those of you.

Am looking to upgrade my old Aiwa AV amp to one with some newer formats.

I have about £180-£200 to spend and they will be paired with the stuff in my sig, a freeview box and a gamecube. Obviously music isn't needed.

    Options so far are:

    Pioneer VSXD714
    Pioneer VSXD811
    Denon AVR1705
    Harman Kardon AVR2550

    Anyone have any advice?

I had considered that but prefer to keep the two separate in case I have to move them about.

surely its better that you can combine the two in the future? the better amps always have preouts anyway

Definitely, to keep my options open.

    the pioneer '714 doesn't.

    the pioneer '811 isn't a v.good amp. the 814 is though.

i'd look at the yamaha 630 or marantz 7200 i linked to. if u can find either for under £200 they'd be a very good buy :) . They're 6.1 too.

the hk will sound good btw. i have the avr4500 but you pay an awful lot for the brand name. mine retailed at £650 but got it for £400 so wasn't too bad in the end

the HK is £220 new but that is a little over budget really.

I like the look of the Denon and it has the newer formats which the HK is missing

hava look on AVTalk or AVForums for s/h avamps with pre-outs. The Denons above the AVRxxx2 models have PL2 and many have pre-outs. I have been a happy AVR2802 owner, though I've now upgraded to a meridian av processor.

I have seen an ex-demo Denon AVR1602 for £175, is this the next model down from the 1705?
Have had a look on AVTalk and it all seems a bit slow! Will have a quick look on avforums but I don't remember anything recent

I have been offered a Denon 1603 or 3801 for within the budget

    Which is the better?

I would not go for either.

I doubt whether 1603 has pre-outs, and the 3801, although superior in so many ways, does not I think have DLP2.

As it happens (and beware I may be about to sell you something) the best buy is a s/h 2802, as it has both pre-outs and DLP2. I bought one and have been happy owner, but as you can see from my sig. I only use it as stand-in as amplification while I source 3 channels of poweramp. I am looking to sell it on. PM me if you are interested.

But I stand by a s/h 2802 or 2803 being worthwhile for your purposes.
