I want to build some 5m long interconnects for a little plan I have hatched and I reckon I need some mic cable and decent plugs.

Can anyone steer me in the direction of some suitable stuff probably from Maplins as I am having a bit of a nightmare with their website and can't locate the right bits..

I thought mic cable as it will be a long run and pass by a load of TV/Video equipment on it's way to where it's going but I'm open to suggestions...

Thanks for the codes, for the record I just phoned them about GWS and they have discontinued it, apparently..

    Maplin:

    Connectors:

    XS23A - Gold/Rhodium locking. £15 pair

AQ56L - Cheaper shark plugs. 24crt gold coating

CC23A - Pure silver screened cable for making GWS. According to the website it is in stock.

Yes, the maplin site is horrid to navigate and very slow....

I bought some silver Shark wire (CC23A) a week or so ago. Very nice stuff. Might be a bit pricey for a 5m I/C though (10 metres of cable @ £15/m = £150)

As for plugs, budget Shark ones are okay but check out Audusa locking RCAs at www.audusa.com

    £20 for 4

    Good plugs :)

I made some to attach the DVD/xbox to the stereo, needed about 3 metres.

Bought a bit of 2 core from b&q, some plugs I had around that had cost about £5, total cost inc plugs £6.

    :)

    sounds pretty good too.

Umm, I bought some of the Audusa locking plugs, but now I don't quite know how to connect the return.

I guess I just solder it somewhere to the inside of the plug, or just leave the shield in contact with the plug outer and use that as a return.

    Any advice welcome.

    Thanks.

I'm not sure if this is the correct method but this is what I did:

    - twisted the return wire into a small tail
    - folded the return wire backwards so that it was touching the outside of the plug body
    - soldered it in place

now this obviously creates a blob on the outside of the plug body which means you can't screw the locking collar on. So I ...

    - ground the solder blob flat using a bench grinder. You could use a hand held file to do the same job. Anyway, the solder join is still good and strong even after the grinding and the collar now slides on easily.

by the way, have you seen this cable on Ebay

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3059260099

just the job for your i/c ;)
