This is probably a daft question but I was wondering if there's anything else you can connect to a phono stage to send it an appropriately miniscule signal for burning in (other than connecting the record deck).

I don't want to leave my cartridge running all day, for obvious reasons (or the spacedeck for that matter, although it could easily handle it.).

    Cheers folks

    Hi David,

If you must have some signal present, just connect an old phono cable and leave the other end free. This will induce noise (mostly hum) into the stage and get it ticking over.

Personaly I think it's a waste of time but whatever floats your boat :)

Why do you think the phono stage needs burning in ?

are you certain the unit should not sound as it does...?

    what is it ?

It depends on how confident a diyer you are .....

you could build an attenuator to mimic the signal input level ..a simple L pad for each channel ...build this into a rca plug and socket ..then using your cdp run the signal outputs through the attenuator into the phono preamp ...but if you get it wrong !!!

I'd then look to see if you can't find a copy of the XLO burnin disc [number 03091110002] and run this disc in the cdp...

this disc will help and it also has some other useful tracks on it too.

    Hi Baudrillard,

If you've bought a Cole with MC TXs, according to Thorsten Loesch, they will require a substancial period of forced burn in, simply because the magnetic core is huge and will not see much magnetisation with normal MC signals.

Here are Thorsten's burn in instructions for TX-103s:

"Please consider connecting a CD-Player to the secondary (Output) of the TX-103 and then terminate the input with a low resistance resistor (quality uncritical), I'd say 27 Ohm when connected for 14db gain, 6.8 Ohm when connected for 20db gain and 2.2 Ohm when connected for 26db gain. Leave with a highly dynamic, wide bandwidth signal CD to play for a week or two. I would use music, but I'd expect pink noise to work well too."

Baud do you have the Cole yet? If so what is it like, does it have the LCR eq, thanks Keith.

    Hi

Yes, it is an LCR Cole with new Silk TX and LCR. Great sound far more 'musical' than the Minimax. An often used term but definitely applicable here. Not to say that the Minimax wasn't musical but with the cole you really 'feel' the music. I'd say thats it main strength and lifts it above most of the competion, as it isnt common to pull off. I like the 6922.

Slight problem with the PS causing a hum and speaker buzz. Brian is preparing a new mains transformer module to send me for 250v to replace the standard 230v one. My mains was running at about 246v when I tested it, which I think is fairly normal for the UK- so not sure why there is a problem. DIY send a lot of stuff to the UK, supposedly

Regarding burn in, it is silver-wired and has 7 blackgates. So, rest assured, it will open up more with time ;)

Keith, the minimax was a good phono stage and I prefered it to the ss ones, I'd heard. The Cole communicates the feeling in the music more convincingly and this was apparent as soon as it came out the box from Hong Kong.

Thanks Rob, Griv and Pete for the tips.

That sounds like good value for what you get. It'll be interesting to hear one of these at some point.

Good value for sure. Let's hope the mains issue gets resolved soon. Positive thinking!

I've never owned any hifi, valve or solid state, that needed "burning in". Some of the valve stuff has taken 10 mins or so from switch on to sound at its best.

Baudrillard, I have just been listening to an Allnic 1500 LCR phono stage, it is sperb, the best stage I have heard so far. I don't know how much of it is down to te LCR eq, but it is extremely enjoyable.

    Coops,

I would like a proper listen to the Allnic. We will have to arrange.

Being quite close to Stevens and Billington. That the TX 103 do need burning in. Your instructions for burning in is correct. They have a CD player constantly on the go connected to transformers.

Paul Hi I would welcome your opinion, it is extraordinarily good, the best phono I have heard so far, valve regulated power supply, LCR modules are made by Mr Park, I don't believe there is anything to touch it and anywhere near the price, regards Keith.
