    arrived back from upgrades today.

    fast recoveries.
tentlabs xo chip regulator and xo chip itself.
    power supply decoupling.
new digital section power supply regulator.
    4 x opamp changes.
    2x dual opamp changes.

and the results are very much a game of two halves.

it times better, noticable on jazz, theres more swing, just.
there was some digital hash. power supply noise breaking through at high frequencies, this has gone and removed some top end glare, very noticable, more analogue sounding.

tone and timbre hasn't changed, wood still sounds just as woody etc etc.

however, i've lost about a foot and a half off the top of my soundstage, and this is noticable.i have plinthed my speakers since it went away, so maybe i need to lower the speakers and angle them down/up a touch. but i never noticed such a capping of stage height when i fiddled with my speaker positioning previously.

i'll let it settle in for a day or two and then start moving stuff around.

so a more anologue sound, but lost stage height.... not sure it's an improvement definately a difference.

i'll let you know if it recovers, but at the minute, it's a sidegrade.

    exactly.

what i do find interesting is that the chnages or seriously minimal, which lends me to think ti was a very well sorted design in the first place.

what were your thoughts about it in a stock version.

a friend whose ears i can trust wasn't impressed enough with it on a direct comparision against 640C.

stock i thought it was excellent, huge soundstage, decent timing, natural tone, it did have a litle bit of hash or top end glare to it and the bass though full could be a bit tighter.

damping the case fixed the bass, actually a more impressive difference than the mods i've just paid for.

i haven't tried the 640c, but i rate the 840 highly, it walked over a MFA5 cd, and wasn't totally embaressed with my old CD17KI, with mods, playing into the dac 64, though the dac 64 was obviously better.
