can someone explain why you can use the pre-out RCAs on an amp/receiver to power a sub, but you can't use the "tape out" RCA plugs? if the signal is loud enough to go to a tape deck, why isn't it loud enough to go to a sub?

i'm new to anything more than 2-channel, so bear with me :MILD:

You could do it but you would have full output going to the sub all the time. In other words, the sub level would be permanently at max and not controllable through your amp's volume knob. You would have to separately adjust your subwoofer volume each time you changed the main system volume. Could you live with that arrangement?
