...aslo a good way to get drowned.

I don't know anything about it but i certainly would go out on you own.

+ have someone physically fit with you...at least to start with. Water is not to be messed with.

you can drown in two foot of water in a canoe.

go down the local baths and see if they run a canoe club, learn to paddle, learn to roll and then get one.

there's loads of cheap rota-moulded boats these days, a kayak is a bit more civilised, but less easy to turn and generally more for making trips than having ufn.

Yes, maybe calm water foot or so deep is on thing. I was imaginaing deep river stuff.

But as soemone pointed out 1' will very easily turn into 2'......theres certainly nothing to say it won't....

Jesus lets assume mr Cat is an adult.

We used to ride head long into 6feet plus on our mountain bikes. Also on the way into 'the Maltings' in salisbury is the river avon which runs under buildings etc we used to jump from the foot bridge. And we used to jump off the ring road foot brigde some 15 feet into about five feet of water.

don't be girls, I swear to god the old health and safety will make us all into wieners.

yeh that's ok if you have a great 'danger radar' or inbuilt risk assesment developed over years of doing shit as a kid.

i can make a snap visual assesment of any activity sport related risk, it took me years of falling off E5's and crashing bikes off cliffs to learn that skill though.. ;-)

Just spotted this one , and have kayaking expierience .

First off decide what you want to do , canoe or kayak , there's a big difference .

No you don't need a licence , and they are no restictions as long as you are not trespassing .

However it is not something you just pick up , I would sugest joining a local club and learning the correct techniques , they will also have organized paddles so you will become used to moving water .

It's amazing fun , but it won't get you fit as you tend to go with the flow and the river does the work ( unless you get into playing in white water ) , it will increase your upper body strength though

Just give it a go , most clubs will have boats and kit they will loan out to potential members , so you've no excuse , go and try it .

Just go and do it, don`t get tied down by this and that type of canoe, get one second hand, nothing to specialist, make sure its basically sound, get a good life jacket and set sail. i did that 30 years ago great fun, even went surfing in the sea, as you do it you will learn what you prefer and if you get seriously into it you can join a club and do the "special" training

Sit-on-top kayaks are good fun. Require less skills but still great fun and if you flip over its easy to sort yourself out and get going again. Ocean Kayak make something that you'd have a good laugh on. You don't need a spray deck as you do in a traditional kayak. I find that a traditional kayak is more likely to get left behind the garage as its a bit more hassle to just jump in and go.
