I manage to bend the stylus very badly on my Dynavector DV 20X last night - it got caught on the sheet that I use as a dust cover. I know you can get expensive exchanges but is it possible to get it repaired cheaply? Also, is it worth it? is there a better alternative now? Will make do with a spare Denon DL110 for now.

If its only bent, £40-50 is about right. But if the tip is damaged way more than that.

    EAR 834P damaged??

I have replaced my Dynavector which I managed to bend the stylus badly with a Denon dl-110 and I now have to use the on-board phono stage on the preamp as the EAR is full of distortion and crackles. Has it possibly been damaged by bent stylus on the cartridge? It now takes the damaged equipment total to £1,300:(

A bent stylus cannot damage a phono stage.
Which version 20X have you got?
If its the low output version and the EAR has been set for 'MC' you cannot use the Denon into that input as it has high output and will likely give distortion due to overload.

IIRC the EAR uses transformers to provide the MC gain so they would need to be bypassed for the Denon.

    <edit>

Stereophile 834 review indicate you can switch from MM to MM.

Rob - It is the low output version - with all the recent trauma it didn't occur to me. Good news at least.

Bottle - hopefully this isn't necessary now.

The Dynavector will be going off to Expert Stylus this week.

It has however allowed to to compare the EAR and Quad phono stage (and the Dynavector vs Denon), which i hadn't actually tried and the difference is quite amazing. The Expert stylus chap did also suggest a Benz Glider as a possible upgrade.

    Thanks all for your help

I went from dv20x to Benz LP, managed to pick one up half price. Huge upgrade.

    Hi Pixies

I have an 834p, currently borrowing a glider. Have a kontrapunkt and a moving magnet.

When the glider goes back, will be using the moving magnet over the kontrapunkt moving coil.

    Reasons -
    1) worn diamond replacement with the moving magnet is £60 every few years instead of £250 at expert stylus
    2) the step up transformers inside the 834p really aren't that hot. MM of course does not use them.
