    HI All,

Just putting the new Johnny Cash box set on me Christmas list in the (vain?) hope that the other half will cough up the readies. Amazon only list it on CD. Does anyone know if there is a vinyl version? If not the silver discs'll have to do. Just wondering.

Ooh, I didn't realise this was due out. Fan-bloody-tastic. It's on Universal, so your guess is as good as mine as to whether it'll come out on vinyl. I can't find anything suggesting it will, more's the pity...

I've been searching long and hard and can find nothing, too, so looks like CD only at the moment

Have you asked this question on vinylasylum, as I reckon they may know?

Yeah, saw this was coming out. Anyone else reckon the 5th disc is a kind of pointless effort? Essentially a Best Of the American series of albums... surely everyone likely to buy this set already has the tracks?

As for a vinyl edition, just how many sides would that be?

Well according to a guy over on Vinyl Asylum:

"According to Rick Rubin the box set will not be released on vinyl but individual LPs will be released. I don't know when."

Ilockyer, You're right I guess. It would be a lot of albums - between 5 and 10 in the box depending on how long each CD is. Probably not economic. As to the last disc? Might be good for the car :)

Well Santa didn't bring me the Unearthed box set, but the Birthday Fairy did :D

Well what can I say - Its bloomin fantastic. I can't believe some of this stuff was rejected as outtakes. I confess I haven't listened to every last track yet (there are 79 tracks here after all), but what I've heard so far is very good indeed and some of it (Cash and the Chilli Peppers covering Neil Young's Heart of Gold for example) is spine tinglingly excellent. The 4th album in the box - "My Mother's Hymn Book" is the best of what I've heard so far - so long as the religious theme doesn't put you off

The packaging is superb as well. Recommended (although admittedly expensive).

hopefully they will release more vinyl copies of each release now that the box set is out on CD.

Some of the american series are very hard to get on vinyl.

If you see them re-released let me know :)

    Chris,

Will do. All four of the American recordings were due for re release middle of last year by Lost Highway, but for some reason it was cancelled with no sign of them yet. Amazon traders sometimes have them available secondhand.

As to the box set. Rumour has it they will be released piecemeal on vinyl, but don't know when. Being a bit of a vinyl addict I generally prefer to get it on vinyl if available. But the boxset is so gorgeously presented and the recordings on it so good, that I'll happily live with the CD version. Not sure if the UK version is actually available yet. Mine was a US import from Selectadisc. Hopefully the UK version we will be equally luxurious.

    Cheers

    Tony

    BUMP!

For some reason I've only just got round to buying this. What can I say? I've been listening to The Man in Black since I was about 10 years old, but he rarely did anything as good as the 4th CD of gospel and spirituals in this box - truly beautiful, and extremely moving. And the sleevenotes are informative and interesting. Wonderful Cash line in an interview, when asked about whether he was angry with God for June's sudden death: "No, I don't get angry with God... My arms are too short to box with God."

    What a man.

Not heard the box set yet, unfortunately, but sideshowbob - I think that 'boxing with god' quote is from a really good interview(his last?) that was published in the Guardian a while ago.

I'm no good at links, I'm afraid, but if you log into www.guardianunlimited.co.uk and search in the archive you should find it. Well worth a look, IMHO.
